The 'new' KMiata kit is about $2000USD cheaper than the old one if you use one of the newer engines..

How about an all-British lightweight V8 roadster, one of our Bucklers. 1959 Buckler DD2 tubular space frame, Daimler 2.5 V8, Moss gearbox, Quaife diff. Weighs in at less than 400 kg. It's very exciting to drive.......

It looks like a good option for sure. If you were not power greedy a UK K20 would be the sane solution.

Never heard of a Buckler. Looks cool!
I know I drool on about yank motors. Although I also love the idea of a true lightweight... A K20 in either an Elan or Ginetta G4 would no doubt be amazing fun.

If I was in the market, I'd start by listing every engine I could think of and note it's weight, peak torque an hp numbers. Then see how easy they are to modify and look at relliability and affordability etc. Things are much easier to compare when they're in a spreadsheet. I have such a spreadsheet, but then I had to add a column for the gearbox (MX5 with adaptor, or another option), then another for the diff, then another for power with small modifications, then another for approx weight gain or loss once a complete swap is done, then another for availability / cost of the engine and the rest of the parts ... then I realised most of my figures were actually wrong because owners tend to over estimate their power, and under estimate the weight. Then I gave up I might give it another go, but it's not easy!! Russell

Black Cat are UK based, and are developing a K swap kit for the MX5. Seem to be doing it "the right way" so far ...
I do love the idea of something a bit older like a Buckler ... I need to finish my 5 project first though, really annoyed with myself at getting sidetracked with the Elise so I'm determined to at least get it back on the road

Not many about, no. They come in all shapes, some with aluminium bodies, some with the Microplas Mistral as pictured (it's the one I showed you in the garage). No two cars are the same. Engines are usually Ford side valve E93a or 100E, but also MGA in some cars, also Coventry Climax and the Daimler V8. Running gear is usually Ford Pop with a swing axle front mod. Some have Morris Minor torsion bars. They come up now and again through the register (there's a facepalm page too), for between £10k - £20k. There's some great ones in New Zealand too. There's a few Bucklers competing at Prescott on 5th/6th October, come down and take a look, plenty of V8 action too www.prescott-hillclimb.com/events/american-autumn-classic-october-2019

400kg Just the Daimler V8 is 225kg already, leaving 175 for the rest of the car. Massively impressive if true. I see 475kg dry figures for stock Bucklers with a 1.5l 4cyl, so a huge amount of work must have been done.

I suppose the modern equivalent is a Radical... Hyper light, nothing which isn't about going faster.
I guess you could always approach things the opposite way around. Start with a race / track day car and add a couple of basics... Windscreen for one.

I suppose the modern equivalent is a Radical... Hyper light, nothing which isn't about going faster. A Radical SR8 is not even remotely in the same category, weighing in at 680kg despite starting with an claimed 88kg V8 engine. Ariel atom V8? Same 125kg engine weight advantage over the Buckler, 200kg heavier than the claimed weight of that Buckler. Anything under 700kg for that Buckler would be an engineering marvel. Now regarding that Powertec V8->I'm just going to leave this here...(sound on)
