So I find myself looking at cheap V6 jags on ebay ... crazy that I can buy a complete, working 3.0 V6 S type for under £600 ... just wondering if there is any advantage (donor engine wise) to getting a Sport model over an SE?

Hi there. Thank you minty.
Hi Russell. The 3.0 lt engines from the Jaguar S-type's are all rated at the same power level. Also the one from the X-type 3.0 lt. That shows a slight difference but it's due to the manifolds not the engine internals.
On e-bay a typical engine from a "breaker" is around £300 fully dressed with everything on it delivered and with some sort of guarantee, say 90 days. When the guy I buy from has them in, he's a Jaguar breaker, he sells at £200 delivered Nationwide, with a guarantee.
You don't even need a fully "dressed" engine. ENGINE LESS .... exhaust manifolds and inlet manifold and starter motor and flywheel/clutch and motor mounts is WHAT YOU NEED. The sump is only needed to keep it all clean. You DO NEED the engine wiring loom, coil packs and water pump.
I can't wait to start working on my project again, end of next week before I can though.
Regards. Rich.

I can't tell you how much I love this thread. It's my first stop on Mighty5s. Keep wondering if there's some other forum where people are following your house build thread and wishing you weren't getting distracted by cars.

Subscribing to this, I've got a 200whp turbo mk1 but like the idea of a V6.

Hello Shane and thank you for having a look see.
Do you have a RR print out you could share here with me please? lm particularly interested to see the torque figures but the HP also.
Thank you. Rich.

Love this thread.
I can't remember where you're located but if you're not too far from me I'll come shoot some video and photos for you.

Hi there. Thank you all for the continuing interest in my little project.
I'm happy in the future to show the project off. When it's a bit more interesting, say when it actually goes brrrm brrrm, before it goes to Emerald for the RR sessions. Right now the engine is coming out and going back in like a fiddlers elbow.
This week we sort out the starter motor and engine to gearbox stuff.
I will tell you now, I guess it wouldn't stay a secret for long anyway.
Early on it became clear that the starter motor, steering rack shaft, exhaust manifold and engine mount all happening on the drivers side was going to be a right pain. But this is not my first "rodeo" so I was prepared for this.
The solution I chose was to eliminate one of the items. Well that had to be the starter motor. So what to do with it then? Well, mount it from the back, coming through the gear box bell housing on its own mount and then affixing to the adaptor plate.
Ok, so far quite straight forward.
Next, what starter motor? I needed one that was powerful at 1.2Kw and had a pinion gear ratio that was matched to my ring gear tooth number, hmmm. Also because I was running a clockwise direction engine I needed the starter motor to also run clockwise as it was activating when turned through 180 degrees. You see most starter motors run anti-clockwise. That would spin the engine backwards. Added to all of that it needed to have a 12o'clock and 6o'clock mounting pattern.
Yikes! This was becoming more and more complicated.
First I looked at the Jaguar starter motor. What the hey ho? This mounts from the side. Well that was a no go straight off the bat. Also the pinion gear was wrong, tooth profile and number of teeth. I had thought that if it would work I would simply have it rewound.
Much reading later and trying to find specific in detail information about starter motors I was getting nowhere. I looked into having one created. Wow! £300. No thanks. As I keep banging on...... This kit has to be correctly Engineered and CHEAP.
In the depths of my old head for some reason I was carrying around some information about Honda engines, why, I don't know, but when your old your head is full of crap. Anyways, I remembered that Honda had this notion about engine rotation and the application of torque delivery. I'm not sure of the specifics now but I did remember that this involved turning the engine anti-clockwise. So, that starter motor would then turn clockwise if swung through 180 degrees. Great, part one sorted. Now, the pinion gear. Well it turns out that the Honda S2000 starter motor has the right pinion on it. It's also a 12 and 6 o'clock mounting. And the best bit... brand new £75.00.
So that my reader is how I came to the starter motor choice. The whole project has been like this so far, but I have spared you the details. I'm so good to you.
That's it for now. Regards. Rich.

You had my curiosity, now you have my attention!
I've been eyeing this swap for a year now. Makes sense in so many ways! Lightweight, powerful and with a soundtrack to boot.
You've answered all my questions with your detailed approach, keep the updates coming.
I'm crossing my fingers and wishing you all the best for the project. Can't wait to see it running and ready to be installed in my Mk1.

Hello all. Sorry about the total lack of current information. As you may have read in my build here detailed I'm also building myself a house.
Well whilst the weather has been so good I have had to come off the V6 project and finish ground works for the house.
That's almost done now so soon I shall be back at the V6 project. I wish I could be on it full time but that is unlikely until begining of June. I've also had to do some work on my MX-5 for its MOT tomorrow. What with waiting for bits to arrive and the work that swallowed up a week of time.
I'm intending to be at the Bracknell meet this week, it is this week, right? Not been to one before so I'm looking forward to meeting some of you I hope.
Regards. Rich.

Well im hoping it will be worth the wait. I like the FI cars but I just wanted another type as I've had a few of those cars. And keeping it on a level equal to a properly sorted 250Bhp FI at very similar costs will at least give yet another option.
It will be interesting to hear the V6 screaming at 7500Rpm. And with a very small amount of work the AJ30 V6 Jaguar engine goes beyond 8000Rpm. That's with stock internals, it's only the valve springs and the camshaft profiles that get changed for that. And according to people that know, pick up about 40Bhp into the deal. Should be awesome. I could be wrong, but I don't know of any V8 MX-5's that get even close to that Rpm.
As soon as I'm back on it I will resume the updates with as much detail as I can.
Regards. Rich.
