Can't speak for later models but I compiled years of mpg data for my previous Mk.1, both normally aspirated and supercharged, and can confidently say that brand and octane made absolutely bugger all difference to fuel economy. While NA, supermarket 95RON was just as good as premium brand high octane stuff with secret cleaning ingredients, tested over multiple fillups with each. Knowing how the mk1 and mk2/2.5 ECUs work, this doesn't surprise me at all... On an 'agricultural' ECU like wot is in those cars, there's no capability to advance the timing to take advantage of higher octane fuel, only temporarily retard it (on models where a knock sensor is fitted, mk2.5?) if knock is detected. Cars with modern ECUs will actually adapt the timing to the fuel grade so economy and power will change dependant on grade. The only thing that super unleaded will get you on an early '5 is knock resistance, which is probably only relevant if you have manually adjusted the base timing a lot, have an aftermarket ECU running a lot more advance, or forced induction which has been mapped for super...

As far as I am aware the quality standard of fuel is good enough in the UK that there is no point in using expensive fuel with the standard ECU on a mk1 or 2 unless of course it makes you feel good - like people who convince themselves that Farmers Market produce tastes better!! The timing advance mod proves this - 10 degrees was set to allow for bad quality fuel - the fact that we can advance by about 4 degrees shows that standard fuel is good

Almost! But I'm not sure including a trackday on the tank counts

Local Tesco got momentum so I brimmed it, 33.19 to the gallon! Not bad, motorways and thrashing about. Additive in, will report back The results are in, 28.18mpg, but the previous figure included a bit of motorway cruising I'm thinking this experiment is going to be hard to carry out with due scientific rigour due to somewhat changeable conditions lol

I reckon the additive may be useful as a knock inhibitor if you are boosted, but increased mpg? In your dreams

So the last fuel up is with the octane booster. Which included a trackday... Next fuel up should show better results

34.5mpg average for the last four fillups (1200 miles) in my Mk.1 1.8.
Better than usual by 2-3 mpg. Maybe a mix of hot weather, school holidays and commuting a little later to miss the worst of the traffic.

I tried it in my TVR, no increase in MPG & got a nasty oily smell from the exhaust when stationary ππ
