Usual story here I think - I've checked the fuses which are fine and it doesn't blow cold. It's an R12 system.....the local specialists say that it's as easy as swapping the valves and regassing with R134.....the wisdom of the internet is that this works great for about 6 weeks before it all escapes due to small molecules and perished seals.
I've not got the money for a proper R134 conversion...so considering R24 (i think) but people in the US seem to be using propane. This sounds like a cheap and sensible option for a 25 yr old vehicle.....anyone know who might be able to do this?

well, unless the atmosphere is somehow different in the UK, if you do the R134 conversion it will work just fine - you may have to top off once a year when you turn it on the first time in the spring, but it's really not a big deal. I did it to mine 9 years ago and my A/C blows ice cold any time I turn it on (and here in Arkansas, A/C is mandatory in the summer time!! )

You can buy a set of seals from the US for about $15 so about £20 ish by the time it's shipped to the UK. The seals aren't that hard to fit, but make sure you get a new drier unit before you re-gas the system, and also make sure it's empty before you pull it apart. If you're car is on R12 then I'm guessing it's a '93 mk1, in which case the drier is not available anymore. But I'm reliably informed one from a similar age Shogun will work just as well (check visually for compatibility)
oh and the converters are a couple of £ each on UK eBay
