“ I'm not looking forward to getting the inlet manifold on... lol” Good luck with that... You shouldn’t have taken the damn thing off in the first place! lol I didn't have a choice - had to have the head skimmed and the valve sorted! I made notes on what extensions I needed and where I had to put my hands to get the bolts/nuts off, so hopefully refitting is the reverse of removal... whu does everyone belly-ache about the inlet manifold? theres worse jobs out there I've had the manifold off my 1.6 & it wasn't a problem Rich.

New soft deadline target for you... Jan 2 2020 onwards... if you fancied a run out to collect my car? No worries if not, Katie is up for it anyway. Although it may give you some inspiration / encouragement to test your handiwork

Although it may give you some inspiration / encouragement to test your handiwork Well, the days I was going to go into work before being made redundant now won't happen because they're shutting the building so I may well have time to get it done after Xmas... lol Will let you know! Although it needs an MOT before I can officially drive it...

The engine needs to run to get an MOT... If it don’t run at least the exhaust output will pass the emissions test Rich.

If it don’t run at least the exhaust output will pass the emissions test Rich. lol I think I know a man who knows a man that doesn't even need to have the car in the workshop for an MOT... I will be interested to see the emissions - with no Cat it has stunk standing behind it, properly noxious stuff, much worse than old classic cars seem to, but I'm wondering if that was just the now-fixed valve issue at work... We will see! Got to finish my Christmas shopping tomorrow morning, then everything Xmas-related kicks off, but roll on the New Year! Unemployment and lots of spare time beckons... lol

You will not be unemployed. You will be a full time mechanic until you are hooning about again in a finished car Only after this critical mission are you allowed to search for gainful employment. Possible plan... My new insurance starts on the 2nd. So V6 trip / collection on 3rd onwards seems ideal. You can have the 1st Jan for your hangover. 2nd for head gasket completion. 3rd for the test drive out... No pressure

lol I didn't have a choice - had to have the head skimmed and the valve sorted! I curse the tiny Japanese hands that designed the intake manifold bolt arrangements - total PITA. Working by feel alone for the bottom row I've managed to get three of four in pretty easily, but the front one is totally inaccessible - I can barely get a finger on the bolt hole, nevermind guide the bolt into it, do it up finger-tight and then get a socket on it. I hadn't removed the manifold support bar but I think I will have to to get any chance of having enough space to work and get it fitted. The top row is similarly a PITA. Socket + small extension + knuckle joint thing + medium extension + ratchet + a spanner to guide it to the bolt head and I can juuuust get the trickiest one in, but it feels like it's super-resistant and cross-threading. I don't think it is but it's a worry, and I don't want the hassle of needing one drilling out... And it's finger-scrapingly-difficult to get the bolts in with your fingers in the first place. I can see why people bolt it to the head and then put the head on. I've left it finger tight on all but the stupidly inaccessible bottom one, which I'll deal with when I restart, and hopefully it will all be fine when it's done up. In other news, I think I need a new alternator because the mounting face where it moves on the bracket is worn, meaning the pulley (and the whole unit) does not sit parallel to the auxiliary belt. Ho hum. I should really have had the thought to check it before now so I could replace and refit while the intake manifold was off, but the manifold is (mostly) fitted now and I'm not going through that hassle again, haha, so I'll just have to do an alternator swap later. It annoys me how what should be a five minute job to do up a few bolts ends up taking bloody ages because nothing is ever simple.

Well done on getting some stuff done. Even though it sounds annoying!
Would it help having the car on a lift?
I've been shattered all day. I only did a couple of jobs. Then the rain gave me an excuse to chill out again.
