I accidentally removed my dashboard today (as you do). Because I didn't intend to (and because I'm not used to working around ECUs) I didn't disconnect the battery until I noticed that the numberplate lights were on despite the ignition being off. I'm now terrified I've fried something tiny that I don't understand. It's a 92 automatic with no ABS or airbags or anything like that.
Please post me honest news (and send cups of tea/a MegaSquirt if I've Canoeed it).
I only wanted sound proofing!

Is it *only* the numberplate lights on?
They are surely on the same circuit as the sidelights, so super-weird if they are alone!

Because I didn't intend to (and because I'm not used to working around ECUs) I didn't disconnect the battery I don't see a reason to disconnect the ecu when removing the dashboard on a mk1 / NA car? with the ignition off there shouldn't be any power at the ecu so don't wirry (I hope ) I'd guess the numberplate lights illuminated is a result of switches being disconnected (anything pressing on the brake pedal?) Rich.

Yeah sidelights, it was the numberplate I noticed though. I don't get why they would be on with the dash removed though....all I've done is broken circuits. There is a small permenant feed for the interior lights and aftermarket transponder, which were removed at the time.

I'd guess the numberplate lights illuminated is a result of switches being disconnected (anything pressing on the brake pedal?) Quite possibly the dashboard was resting on the brake peddle, it was one of the many awkward "what's it catching on now?" moments that go hand in hand with thoughts of leasing a Dacia. Generally they last until it's all back together again...I think that will be Monday night now though

To ask the question... could you have twisted the lights stalk to the sidelights position, maybe?? lol

Wiring diagram for the sidelights from the 1989 Workshop Manual, if it's any help!

Yeah, I think you are right, I spent a long time swearing at the stalks because they were in the way. Dweenimus, if you've been knocking your wipers on whilst taking the dash out, it sounds like I'm likely in the clear. Interesting that they are labelled "parking lights" on the diagram too....

I always drive around streetlit areas with only my 'parking lights' on! As no-one has read the Highway Code and how one can do so on restricted roads with streetlights, I shall continue to not dazzle people and be totally unappreciated for it, all the while being shouted at to 'put your lights on!!!1!' lol The fact that people flash me out of apparent surprise when they are only about 20 feet away on a straight bit of road says much about current standards of driving and observation!

I found this out one evening when my main lights wouldn't work!

... Interesting that they are labelled "parking lights" on the diagram too.... I think it's the North American version of the drawing, so there will be some minor Miata vs MX-5 differences.

The ECU is fine and the car starts and inexplicably, has grown an amplifier behind the seats. How that happened I have NO idea! I've got a single wire dangling though....next to the (automatic) gear stick.) I think it's for the handbrake but I can't remember where the connector is?! On the subject of wires....there is a buzzer that irritates the hell out of me each time I go into reverse....does anyone know it's location so that I can prarrie canoe it up? Thank you!

Thank you! does the reverse beep sound like it's in the rear of the car? if so go digging in the boot - probably by a rear light (passanger side is the first one in the wiring 'line' from the front) Rich.
