Sweet Baby Jesus approves of this purchase. I usually only do things that Jesus would approve of. So that's good to know. I also bought a welder on eBay. There is going to be a lot of lifting stuff, and burning through some prarrie canoe this new year...

i have done a bit to the car since that post. Welded the sills as a temp measure to get through MOT. Did Rockingham track day - that was fun Found a crack in manifold, so getting that welded up Have started to make a spit for the spare shell: Tacked up Bearing to go on top (instead of using tube inside another) One side with some welding done: zoona.co.uk/files/YIW/reshell/frame_welded.jpgNeed to get bearing on top, add some supports, make the bars to fit to the car and have a guess about centre of gravity height so i can actually turn it. Then get round to stripping the other one down and find some way of getting it onto the spit. Haven't really thought one through yet. I have also taken 3 months off work, which should be nice...

decided to put power steering back into my car. It is all back together now. Feels VERY light compared to depowered... will get used to it again. Have also been making progress on the spit. A-frames are done: Have got the rear bar made up as well: Today will be working on the front bar. But that may take a bit more time - the shape is a bit more complex, and the only holes at the front are the small m6 ones. They look a bit weedy.

Got the spit all sorted - and it works. and more importantly I didn't kill myself getting the car onto it: Finished the front and rear bars: And got it all up in the air: And it even tilts like i wanted it to:

Then i started to look at the sills. The passenger side wasn't quite as bad as i thought it would be. I knew the sill had been patched (I.e. Patched over the top) so I knew it would be unpleasant underneath, but it wasn't actually too bad. What was the top layer is dust, but there is metal on the layer underneath: When I looked inside the wing (through the hole in the inside behind the door, it looked bad further up. When I started to take the paint off, I found some filler. And then some more. And then... Some more. It has had some welding fine by a blind monkey, and then Canoeing loads of filler. But the filler is not just over the patch, it goes all the way over the rear quarter. Incredible. So now my garage looks like it is Christmas and I can't breath. I followed the weld across, and there is so much filler I am going to have to take it all off. Looks like I will need a full patch panel and replace it. There are pin holes through the metal all over the place. Other side looks ok on first inspection...

This is the biggest repair i have doen so far, and with not much experience of welding, i need some advice... Where should i cut the current panel to welding my repair? Green or orange line? My assumption is that taking it round the edge on the orange line and using the edge of the repair panel will be easier than trying to weld along that edge. Is that correct?

my experience say yes, and get it off the 'a surface' as much as possible... I have had real issues with fill 'bumps' (which feel glass flat to the hand) showing up under the paint on my rear arch.

I burnt my toe... Started seam welding, and a lump of lava fell off and went straight through my shoe, and lodged between my toes. I was hopping around like a mental case trying get my shoe off. I have a pair of welding boots on order.
