MX-5 1.8i 2000. Does anyone know when the transponders changed fro ID33 to ID8C. Seems the ID8C is a rolling code and is a real pain. Been looking on the net and it seems to be sometime in 2000. Big difference in price. Car only came with one key and looking at it I mistakenly though, great no transponder. Bought a pair of blanks (that will take transponders)and cut them so they open the doors and operated the ignition switch. D'oh ! Car starts runs for a second, then the key symbol flashes and it cuts out. So now I have three key but still only one that works. Our local locksmiths won't or can't do these Mazda keys, so either I a, Go to the main dealer. b, Pay for an auto locksmith. c, Glue the good key inside the column shroud, or d, Change the ECU and immobiliser. The auto locksmith is probably the safest way to go but is also going to be expensive. Any help, ideas or info gratefully recieved. Dave

My MK3 only came with one key so I have the same problem. Sadly I think a proper auto locksmith is the only answer.

That's what I thought. Will get some qoutes. Had a look at the immobiliser and it's the Lucas 19AS type, so the transponder should, I think be the ID33, which are less than £10 each. Might get a pair a put them into the keys I cut and see if a locksmith can just program them for me. If the quote are too high for less than £150 I can buy complete ECU, immobiliser and lock set with keys but will need to check the number on the ecu first. Surprising how many breakers are just selling the ECU on it's own. As far as I can tell all UK spec mx5's the ECU and immobiliser are coded as a pair. Perhaps they can be recoded.

Got the key situation sorted. The guy at Timpsons Andover cut a new key and programmed a transponder for £45. He also did another transponder for £5 which was good of him. The key didn't fit quite as nicely as the ones I cut myself, so I simply put the new transponders into my own keys. Yey, I now have three keys that work.

Something similar happened with my mark 2, i gave up as it was rusty any way. Best bet is new ecu and full lock set etc. Or just get rid :/

Think that £45 is well spent for the peace of mind, of having a spare key. Losing the only key you have can be a disaster. It was also a lot cheaper and less hassle than changing the ECU and all the locks.

I had two keys. I think i fried it all drifting in a car park in a hurricane. Good drift session though..
