HSA class 2A. Not the mx5 specific class as I think the rules are a bit mental! Are you competing this year? We will be competing together then I am also doing the Great Western Sprint, though you will be in A2 for that and I'll be in A3 as I have a 2.0, I am also doing the HSA again. HSA class A2.1 for Mazdas hasn't got any mad rules, unless you consider List 1A tyres mad? Your car would be perfect for that class from what I can see, it is not restrictive like BMC MX5 or Gurston MX5 classes. Its only stipulation is that you are a roadgoing Mx5 and on 1A tyres. I took that class last year competed against some nice 5 owners, it was a good crack. I am doing A2 this year as I have never run 1B rubber so I thought it was time to have a go. Castle Combe have put some horrid tyre barriers up, that basically makes it a different track to last year, I wonder if HSA will reset the records? The tyre barriers look potentially dangerous. Can't wait to get stuck into the HAS calendar! Must do events for me are Shelesley, Gurston and Prescott. Think I may do Loton (as it's fairly lcoal) and might grow a pair and go down to Wiscombe. Wiscombe used to be our 'local' and going there is what got me hooked on the sport! To be honest, that's exactly what I think is mental... you can drop 1000's on a 200hp+ built motor but not use suitable track rubber?!! Think something has been lost in translation along the way! But more importantly I want the challenge and variety of cars in <2l. Be a pretty cool achievement to get the scalp of one of the quick elises for example! Not sure if the tyre barriers would stay on a sprint - might be a track day thing? The ones on the apex aren't too bad, it's the one on the exit which looks a bit scary/dangerous! That would be really nasty to run into...

What are these new barriers at Combe?

What are these new barriers at Combe? Answer my own question by looking at recent you tube videos. The exit ones seems bonkers idea. Anyone getting a bit wrong will collect them and do some nasty damage.

I did those most of those hills for the first time last year, great stuff, Wiscombe, Werrington and Prescott were the more enjoyable ones for me as they had more to them than Shelsley and Guston, not done Loton.
As the HSA championship is run outside of events you'll end up in class with based on what your car is so you will have variety at events anyway, I am yet to be convinced by 1Bs for sprints, on 1As last year I seemed to be quicker than a lot of things I shouldn't of been that were running 1Bs, I pick a soft tyre with big tread that would heat up quickly, grip was only ever an issue when tyres were old, worn and therefore harder. But I will see, not that I have gone for anything extreme just AD08R.
I raised the Combe tyres with my club who are organising the sprint, the tyres are apparently staying up for the sprint, can't see the British Sprint guys going for that. Its the exit ones that are terribly placed.

They won't last long at Spring Action Day.

They do a bit of damage, a single seater is not going to come away from those well.

I can only assume they put them in to slow people down a bit and stop them running so wide. It's proper choppy out there though and you'd only want to run that wide by mistake.

AD08R is a great tyre by all accounts. I'm running Nankang NS2R 120TW. Seem pretty good, they turn on nice and quick and offer really nice communicative grip. Doubt anything would touch SG compound R888Rs tho - they are actually sticky to the touch!
Disappointing to hear about the tyres staying. Someone will have a massive shunt into the ones on the exit. Like you say very stupid location. Justified be CC as to avoid costly track repairs but there's safer options to stick out on track limits to discourage folks using 110% of the track...

One of the club guys has had further contact with Combe and the tyres will be gone for the sprint. Damn that's one excuse for not getting the class record gone

Good info Sandy. Time to study some footage to relearn the track.

You'll be fine, your laps looked pretty tidy with plenty of pace, just means you can take a few liberties in the chicanes and use a bit morr track, you'll have no trouble getting the HSA record for your class and max points in that thing of yours its pace up the hill and above 100 is pretty good, it's what you need for Combe, reckon you could take 10secs off my GWS sprint pace with that at least.

I think I can go sub 150 secs in the dry. The wet is a proper leveller. The FWD cars on the track day came alive. Didn't have a great amount of confidence in the wet. Last corner is very very slippery.
It would be nice to try and take the scalp of the rapid mini that usually wins the class.

I do a 156 on 1As and reckon I am targeting a low 150, the assumption being I can take advantage of the extra grip, with grip and your sort of grunt that would certainly be under 150 hence why I reckon you would do it about 10s quicker than me. Of course that assumes all things being equal, good conditions etc, I already know the motor is not as strong as it once was so we will see, wet conditions have always been favourable for me perhaps due to 1As let's hope it's on our side. For kicks here is my HSA roadgoing class record run Look how slow I am on the bits between corners compared to you I feel there will be some boost in my future.

Very neat. you carry good speed and brake late. Combe is a real momentum track really. What tyres are you now running?

Cluttering up baconsarnies thread, perhaps I should do one of these threads about my car.
Stock brakes in mk3 are very good, lots of confidence.
In that vid I was using continental contisport 5, very nice tyre for the first half of is life, sticky, communicative, godd breakaway, doesn't last long, even once they're a few mm they are done, though that could be the amount of soloing I did on them too heat cycling them too much.
Now trying AD08R, apart from making the ride a little harsher due to being 2.5kg heavier in the tyre alone along with stifc walls, the grip seems quite good, even in the wet, though I have also changed LSD and this might having something to do with it's improved rear grip and change in vehicle dynamics rather than the tyres, get a bit more push now but it grips and goes well, flicks around lovely as it transitions from understeer to the rear helping out, feels quite controllable at high speed (famous last words š)
Never considered a diff might provide an upgrade having already had one in the car but it would appear to be a nice byproduct of my ratio change for hills.
