My first mk1 was red, didnt reach its reserve on ebay but I contacted the guy and said i was interested in a winter project, he said "its certainly that - we nickname it rusty because it has a hole in the petrol tank but it has an MOT and you can still drive it as long as you dont put more than tenners worth of fuel in!!" How much I say - £250 he says - Ok I say!! I am probably the only person who has bought a mk1 mx5 when they have been specifically told it is rusty! Turned up on a dark november night - pouring with rain - the guy said to me - you must be mad buying a car on a night like this!! but took me £250 and I drove it home (about 50 miles). He gave me a full workshop manual on a disc - great extra! I kept that car a year or so - had great fun stripping it out rebuilding it and fiddling about. I met the guy i bought it off at Combe - I was thrashing it about on a track day - he was chuffed to see Rusty lived on. I sold it for £750 3 years later I see its taxed and MOTd and only needed a few things for the last test Rusty mk1's go marching on!! (and its done 150k miles)

Haha that's brilliant. It's amazing how you can turn them around. I expected that Gwyneth, our £250 car would have some problems but I just seemed to keep finding more holes! Was great experience though, and often it's the journey you take getting somewhere that is the 'fun' part. Great news that Rusty is still going, it's so easy just to scrap them once they become uneconomical to fix.
How much did you have to do to it in the end?

I basically dismantled all 4 corners - had to drop the subframe to do the tank so i just cleaned and lubed and replaced what needed doing I spent the £500 I made on it in parts and stuff, but as you say its the journey thats fun. Even my current 1.8 mk1 has needed a little bit of welding this winter - I think its an annual labour of love with the mx5!
