So, I keep thinking about fitting a JR CAI for my early 1.6 SNC engine. But is it worthwhile..?
I am only using the car on the road, and I am not thrashing it, but maybe just a little more power would be nice. However, my quandary is that I am trying to keep her as reasonably standard as possible, or at least reversible. The engine is running beautifully at the moment, revs so freely, and no real flat spots. She has a Cobalt cat back exhaust, but apart from that, engine wise she is standard.
If I fit the CAI, will it introduce any flat spots, as losing a resonance chamber doesn't sound ideal? Are there any downsides? I had heard that there can be an emissions issue, is that true?
Any guidance or experience would be valuable.

Best induction kit for the MK1 by miles.
No down sides (other than cost). More power, nice noise, looks cool.
I had one on mine and only got rid when I went Supercharged.

Damn - was hoping that you'd advise against it . Guess I'll have to call Moss in the morning (will have to arrange delivery when the Mrs is out). Kerrching!!

Had a look at the eBay one, but a little worn round the edges, so phoned Josh at Moss who was good enough to give me a Mighty5 discount on the CAI (which I wasn't expecting as it's always excluded from their sales). Should arrive for the weekend to satisfy my tinkering habit.
Now back to my New Years resolution of not spending any more money on the MX5. Oh, but those Raybrigs do look nice, and maybe some new 8mm plug leads, or even a Skuzzle stage 1 head.......

If they are so good, why don't they produce the 1.8 CAIS any more?

I dont know but i am guessing that the slightly longer 1.8 engine makes it a difficult fit? I suppose they wanted to use the 1.6 airbox version with different hoses to keep the cost down but i think they might be redesigning a new 1.8 version maybe??

Its arrived today: It does look like a number of small alterations have been made to the design, so perhaps the 1.8 version will follow soon?

Can you still fit these with an aftermarket radiator?

I believe they are a tight fit, but more because of the fan. Happy to provide photos and dimensions once fitted.

If the total width of fan & rad is no more than OEM then it will fit, so a slightly thicker radiator and slimline fan should be ok

I need one of these, my council-spec cone air filter is knackered and I'm not entirely sure it's right... lol

Wish I could afford the Blink stage 2, it takes away all the space issues and gives the maximum NA power.
When you think about it, by the time most of us have changed intakes, radiators, fans, CAIS, exhausts etc, etc. we will have spent half the cost of the stage 2.

The blink head is good but combined with exhaust, a good intake etc you get EVEN MORE power! There is no maximum power from an NA engine, only a maximum budget (not quite true, but you get the point).
