So for a while now (2 months or so ... too long I know!) my brakes have been a bit spongy to say the least.
When applied they pull the car up fine but it feels like there is a bellows under the pedal. They pump up on second application but quickly lose pedal feel before the next application of the brakes.
So I thought this was a very gassy style leak (ie ... not fluid getting away) so my thought was servo. My brother reckons it just needs bleeding. My Dad reckons it could be the master cylinder on the way out and I should be more worried!!
There is fluid in the system (ill check again tomorrow but i looked a day or two ago and there was) and the pads have some (but not much) meat left.
I have allocated Saturday to looking at it but want to have a chance to get parts in if I need them (especially if its master cylinder!)
So any ideas what is the thing that goes on these? One of the above? something else?
Cheers
Clem

Mines' the same after changing the front calipers. I'm tempted, for the sake of £40, of getting a grage with a pressure bleeder to bleed it up with fresh fluid.

Yeah my first plan was (still is) to bleed, but Dad made a point by asking how the air would get in? I've not changed owt.
My current wonder is whether its worth grabbing a master cylinder from Autolink just in case

I just wonder if mines always been like it and I just hadn't really noticed until I changed something.

Brakes have always been a strong point on the NC IMO, good feedback and feel from them, mine are stock, doesn't need much else.

Well first plan is to bleed them and see what happens.

I don't know where you're based Clem, but I've got an el-cheapo Laser compressed air powered bleeder (not an ezibleed) if either of you want to borrow it.

Thanks for the offer James. I'm going to pop down to my dad's at the weekend, he has a compressor based one.

Bled the brakes ... and its loads better but still a touch spongy.
Am now going to keep an eye on it, if it gets no worse then clearly they just need bleeding again. If it gets worse then there must be something wrong.
Any news on yours Horne?

I think it was all in my mind. I've done 1,500 miles in the last week and they seem pretty good.

I don't know what pads you're running, but mine is on yellowstuffs, and they seem very weather/heat dependent. When it is cold and damp (bearing in mind the car lives outside), the pads seem to absorb lots of moisture, and tend to feel a bit poor - but when they are dry and warm they are brilliant. I find that this is even more noticeable when I get to a trackday on these pads - the first session, the brakes feel pretty poor as all of the contaminants get boiled out of the pad surface, and then after that (and especially after a couple of heat cycles) they just get better and better.
Do need to have a go with Rodders pads next though.

Just been buying cheap pagid, europarts offers and replacing often, no problems anywhere and complete confidence in the braking, the only time I have been unsure about what my 5 was going to do I was running Yellow Stuff.....

I'm currently on the cheapest pads Autolink had. Think they were £8 for a front set. lol

I had a seized front brake that had destroyed the pads. I to fix it ASAP and bought the pads from Autolink when I collected the caliper. They're actually not too bad! Not sure they'd be any good on a trackday but fine for road use. It'll be interesting to see how they hold up on the FDMC Autosolo in April if I haven't swapped them out by then.
