23rd of June 2019. Midland Hillclimb Championship at Prescott:
Another event under my belt and yet again another round at Prescott. I feel like Im gaining a fair bit of experience at Prescott now, getting to grips with its characteristics and learning the tricks needed go quickly there.
This was a single day event with 2 morning practice runs and the competition runs after lunch. The event would be live streamed by www.Hillclimb.tv the event can we re-watched here via this link:
My runs can be viewed if wished at 0:06:40 and 1:58:21
Theres obviously some way to go with the broadcast to improve the viewer experience but hats off to Rich Danby who is pioneering this coverage on the UK hillclimb scene. The graphics are superb and I very much enjoyed watching some of the Saturday Porsche event from home prior to travelling up to Cheltenham.
There were many Porsches on display in the Paddock including the extremely rare 924 GTR
The weather was a stark contrast to the last round at Prescott. Warm and muggy rather than crisp and cold. The track should have some good grip! It did, which I could immediately sense on dropping the clutch off the start. First practice saw a respectable 49.22 run. For practice run 2 I made a change on the car that I've been meaning to try for the last 2 weekends at Prescott. I had a seat of the pants feeling that an extra click of rebound on the rear dampers would make the car faster through the long Orchard left hander. You can see on my previous onboard the understeer building through the turn. Now running Running 4 clicks from full stiff on the front ASTs and 3 clicks from full stiff on the rears the car felt more balanced through orchard and also "more on the nose" through the tight Ettores "hairpin" . Practice 2 saw a 1 tenth improvement in my PB - setting a 48.50.
With the car now feeling better than ever at Prescott it was time to try and better the mornings run on the first competition run. The run was awful with 2 missed gears including an embarrassing one straight off the start with a missed shift to second. After a mistake like that the red mist descends and you tend to overdrive the car....which I did - resulting in another missed gear out of Pardon hairpin. Luckily the 49.69 time was just enough to take second in the class ahead of an Impreza RA. As expected Roy Standley was out ahead in his brutal Evo 5 RS.
As I have learnt from previous events its important not to let pressure get to you, there's no way you ever set a good time when you're determined to do so. I find being relaxed tends to result in the best performances. I set off on timed 2 feeling relaxed just wanting to enjoy the run. It worked and the resulting 48.64 was enough for another second place and a rather nice Bugatti owners club crystal glass to add to the collection.
The next modification to the car will be the installation of the KAAZ 1.5 way plate diff. This should really help drive out of Pardon hairpin. Can a sub 48 second run be achieved with the current power levels? I think it's possible!
Onboard of the new PB run 48.50:
Next up is a new venue for me, Harewood Hillclimb near Leeds. Its the longest hill in the UK and also a very long drive away from Southampton!
Take home cars from the event? How could it be anything else but THE Stefan Bellof Nurburgring 6min11 secs 956!
