Time to get the car ready for the impending Hillclimb season. All my "hillclimb admin" has been done over the last week.
Paper work has been sent off to join 3x motor-clubs. The BARC SW / HSA and Hagley and District Light car club. Ive entered 2x Hillclimb championships (midland hillclimb championship and Gurston down Hillclimb championship) and the first entry forms for the first 3 events of the year have been posted.
The car sailed through its MOT with just a slightly sticky driver side front calliper needing attention. I plan a full brake service / bleed next weekend.
Yesterday I made good use of the dry weather to finally test fit and test run the new super lightweight exhaust system.
Titanium just looks so cool.
Behold the 1.8kg Titanium / aluminium cat back exhaust.
The car sounds VERY throaty on idle but as soon as its rolling and on a little boost it sounds quite pleasant - which im surprised about. Id say the idle is about as loud as something like a TVR Griffith. Luckily my new neighbours are caterham racers.... so they might be a little more tolerant of early morning start ups!
You can really hear the turbo spooling and it feels like it is even more eager to boost. Throttle response feels crisper too making heal and toe rev matching easier.
I was worried I'd land myself an ASBO driving it around the village but its fairly sensible noise wise whilst cruising in a 30mph zone in 4th. Out on the duel carriage ways above 60mph its really "not that bad" the cars so loud inside anyhow due to the removal of all the carpets and sound deadening that the extra exhaust noise is not much more noticeable at all.
Im pretty confident it will pass the static hillclimb noise limits. If it doesn't then I have a lucky eBay purchase that can come to the rescue. A seriously light weight vibrant racing USA aluminium "muffler" weighing in at just 1kg!
Its a really nicely made silencer and will give the option to dampen the dB levels down touch with minimal weight penalty. A bargain for only 40 quid too.
I did think this silencer was going to be the preferred solution but im so pleased with the noise the straight pipe makes im going to stick with it for the time being.
*I reserve the right to change my mind on this after a 3hr drive up to loton park hillclimb in April.
How it looks from rear. quite subtle
So next weekend the plan is to install some 949 competition engine mounts and service the brakes. Oh and I might have bought a carbon miata carbon boot lid too!
