..... I'm selling all my MK1 stuff and building a MK3 Track/Sprint car.
Did a 30 min session at Silverstone today in the daily and it was such a better car to peddle than the earlier cars.
I feel dirty.

Mine constantly surprises me and others at how capable the Mk3 is as it never really gets the love of the earlier models, but its just an excellent package out of the box that doesn't need much more than some good tyres and suspension and perhaps some weight removal but all I seem to do to mine is add weight and really it hasn't hurt it much. Its power and torque are pretty good too, of course over time you'll want more, but that is always the case. I must get on with the weight shedding and aero this year. The mk3 has been so good I have been considering an mk4 as my daily as it has all the ingredients to be the best yet! If there was a proper Coupe there would be one on my drive already, as a 2 seater convertible doesn't fit as a main car really. Though I am considering circuit racing in a mk1 next year, so I might be going the other way Just need to find the budget......

I'm surprised people are still surprised about the mk3, as if Mazda learned nothing from the earlier models.

Very interesting this, if I was changing up my mk1 - I think I would miss mk2s out and go mk3, I keep looking at them for sale and thinking there's some nice cars about for the money. Now you are saying they are fun on track and I see them competing at solos - kinda makes sense!

Given a choice, I'd miss out the Mk3 and go to the Mk4 ... each one is better than the previous one, without a doubt. The cost and the styling is the only thing that really makes the decisions harder.
I've just got a sorted Mk2 and I can appreciate how quick it is, compared to a sorted Mk1. Probably the first decent Mk2 I've had a go in to be fair. Problem is, it's making me question why I still own my Mk1 track car ... I'd hate to think how much cash I've sunk into it over the past few years (dropped floors £600 a side, full weld in custom cage £1600, and that's just the shell). I don't want to sell it as that would be admitting defeat in some way, but I'm starting to think about it as a serious option.
But then, I think ... pop up lights ...
Russell.

Horney,
I've been watch you grey tan build closely for a while now....
I'm considering making the switch from my MK2 RS with Supercharger to a MK3. But still cant find the heart to break it...
What makes the MK3 such a good choice over the MK1? As i saw you briefly at retro rides before you went up the hill and your mk1 looked pretty sorted?
Last question, what spec would you be thinking to build the MK3 track/sprint car to?
CheersTom

Haha, can't argue with 15 years of progress. I suppose body stiffness is what makes major difference between them on track, is it?

I think the body stiffness plays the major roll, that and the wider track and more power as standard. It just feel more planted and stable than the mk1/2s. The gearbox is nicer as well.

More mechanical grip? Still think this is madness, all that BBQ smoke I reckon
