So yeah. I might have bid on a car after a few beers and then forgot about it until my phone buzzed to say I'd won something. Marc from Skuzzles helped me collect it, so we went up in my R55 Cooper D. The good. Apart from the pictured damage to the front bumper, the body and interior are excellent. The drivers seat has no wear on the bolsters and with a good clean and polish it should look a cracker. It's got loads of history and seems well cared for. The bad. While the temp gauge reads normal the car smells very hot and of coolant. Coolant leak was on the MOT advisories on Feb. Worst case is head gasket so something to investigate. Tyre pressure warning light is on, brake pad warning light is on. For now it's stuffed in my council garage and I Have a couple of busy weeks were I wont be able to look at it. As for the wife. She went a bit nuts and were now embroiled in a conversation about me paying more than 50% of the bills as she's skint but clearly I can fritter my money on silly things.

Assuming you are as open with your missus as you should be about money, have you worked out what percentage each of you bring into the household?
You could move forward on the assumption that you each pay the equivalent percentage of the bills, i.e. If you earn 55%, you pay 55% of the bills, etc etc.

She a higher a rate tax payer, as am I, and we have £500 a month mortgage. If she's skint every month because she's paying loads of money on stuff thats kinda her look out. Lol. Are we open about money? Yeah pretty much. We both have entirely spectate finances and just have a joint account for bills and the mortgage etc. She never asks what I spend on cars, I never ask what she spends on roller skates and clothes.

Going back to the car, what's the plan for it? And why another Mini?

Going back to the car, what's the plan for it? And why another Mini? I've always liked the shape and style of the R50 minis and have toyed with getting one for years. These thiughts increased as they dipped lower and lower in price. The early chocolate box cars were going for below a grand with a noisy box and had thought some of these could be a good turn around for a quick buck. I was having one of my normal browsing eBay after a few beers sessions and this one is a facelift which has the better gearbox and refined interior build. It was listed as an auction and was at a low price and local. I threw in a £1200 bid. The beer fed logic was that the facelift cars always go for £1500 Plus and I was pretty sure £1200 would be below the reserve anyway. Beer brain said I'm 99% sure not to win it but if I do it'll be total bargain. Then forgot all about it until my phone buzzed 2 days later to say I'd won it. As for what I'm going to do with, I have no real idea. It has a couple of cheap things that need fixing which I'll do. I've sourced a bargain Scorpion exhaust for it that was too cheap not to pick up and I'm going to spray the roof and mirror caps white. It then should be worth £2k ish with a decent advert. I'm not really going to make any money on it but I can probably enjoy razzing it about for a bit and then flog it, ending up cost neutral. Randomly I'll be doing a trackday in it in August at Brands hatch. I joined MiniTorque as a useful resource for the Clubman and they have a great prized track evening at Brands. I had a chat with the guys about booking on but taking the Mx5 as clearly a diesel clubman is not a suitable track car. They were cool with it so I booked it. I'll take this now instead. It might also make an appearance at the 5Fest trackday. I have a friend who wants to come by doesn't have a car, I've offered to loan him it for the weekend on a "If you bend it, you mend it" agreement.

I bring in about 75% and get to spend approximately none of it....I think I need bloke training I prefer the looks of the early minis over the current one (how big are they now!?!?) Looks nice, and bet it will be a hoot on track.

My sister has one with the borked gearbox. Which she's still driving. Which I told her to get fixed like a year ago. -sigh-.
Wanna buy it? lol!

If it still works you can change the bearing you can get at through the wheel arch. That should prolong its life. If you don't do that the shaft movement will eventually grenade the whole box. You can get hem refurbished but when hey let go they often punch a hole in the casing. The you're left needing a whole new box or selling the car for £300 scrap.
