Im happy to stay a little drive away - I think it might be nice to get away from the crowds and the noise to camp - it looks really nice might have to make a week of it! (I know i'm old!)

If you haven't been to Le Mans before you're going to have to think about parking at the circuit. There are a couple of options - you can take your chances on one of the residential streets towards the city centre from the main entrance or you can buy parking tickets/use the free parking at the circuit. The Blue parking could be a PITA but is at least free and heading in the right direction or you can pay for a ticket for red parking, which may actually be easier to get to by heading north-east round the circuit and cutting across on a residential street or two. If you go red don't even think of going round the west side of the circuit and past the main entrance. Map here: ticket.lemans.org/info-parking-autoIf you can get to the circuit and want to dump your car there are busses running to all the main corners etc but the queues can be massive. 2018 is my 23rd year and I pretty much do the same thing every year - if I'm staying away from the circuit I arrive around an hour and a half before the start, dump the car in parking or in one of the residential roads, saunter up to the start of the Esses, watch the start and spend the next two or three hours meandering over to Tertre Rouge and sitting on the huge bank on the inside of the circuit opposite the giant screen. Usually leave by seven and down into the old part of the city (or to one of the bars in Arnage or Mulsanne, although they ramp up the prices for the English) for some food. Chill out, maybe watch the race on a big screen somewhere and drive to Arnage for midnight. The queues there are getting longer and worse and the French officials ensure everything like parking in a field takes three or four times longer than necessary to do but the viewing area covering Arnage and Indianapolis is for me the best in motor racing anywhere, especially in the middle of the night. The fastest part of the track is the run up to Indianapolis and it's spectacular at night. Next up, Mulsanne corner (which always involves driving past the officials who try to make you park at the entrance rather then down the track at the ample parking area). Again, a fantastic spot and you get to see the cars accelerating hard away from the corner. Next is the restaurant on the Mulsanne, where you can give the owner's son a couple of euros to stand in one of the rooms upstairs and watch the cars over the big cloth barriers the ACO put up to stop people seeing the racing for free. Finally back to the main straight for four or five in the morning and a crepe (Nutella, naturally) by the Dunlop Bridge. There really isn't anything else like Le Mans through the night. And then you can get a few hours kip if you like and head back in for the rest of the race. I already have a camping pass for a site at the circuit and a ferry crossing (best to get your crossing sorted ASAP) but will come to find you lot if you're all out and about at some point. There's a good chance I'll be on my own and will take the MX. If not, my Subaru and a great big beer cooler.
