After watching bottom end fails on youtube all evening I'm pretty much resigned to the fact I need a replacement engine!
Going to drop the oil tomorrow and see if there are any metal bits in it.

Yeah looks like I'm going to have to start a new thread on how easy is it to remove an engine.

Just to conclude this thread if it helps anyone with the same sound coming from their engine, on taking the engine out and pulling it apart I found that it had spun a bearing shell on conrod number 3. It would seem that the engine had suffered oil starvation, not sure of the reason why, mabe oil pump but couldnt confirm. All the bearing were scored to hell and the cranshaft. Engine now a paperweight!

If you are brake testing it, do you have an LSD? If you do, tell them and you will have to do a tap test rather than cocking it up on the rollers. Tell me more about this! Are we saying that cars with an LSD can't go on MOT testing rollers??

Are we saying that cars with an LSD can't go on MOT testing rollers?? They test wheels individually, so my take is: Welded definite no no. Plate diffs hm. Torsen should be fine. Viscous probably doesn't work any way. What do you have?

I've not had the opportunity / balls to get the back out yet so I've no idea of whether it works or not Some very brief wheel slippage on gravel while setting off is all I've done! Thanks for the info
