That's a common misconception and definitely shouldn't be an MOT fail

Research time!!
MOT Inspection Checklist: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/449392/mot-inspection-checklist-vt29.pdf

I can't see anything in this section that specifically mentions side-running lights.
To cut-and-paste some snippets...:
This inspection is for: •mandatory position lamps •mandatory end-outline marker lamps •daytime running lamps (DRLs) fitted to vehicles first used on or after 1 March 2018
Vehicles don't need to be fitted with position lamps, or they can have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked. In this situation you should issue an advisory notice. These vehicles don't need end-outline marker lamps.
Vehicles must have 2 front and 2 rear position lamps, except for tricycles or quadricycles that are less than 1,300mm wide.
End-outline marker lamps: (I think this bit is only for lorries!)
You must inspect end-outline marker lamps on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1991 that are wider than 2,100mm.
Class 3 vehicles (Three wheeled vehicles <450kg) don't need end-outline marker lamps.
There must be: •2 white lamps visible from the front and positioned at windscreen upper edge level or higher •2 red lamps visible from the rear and positioned as high as is practicable
The front and rear end outline marker lamps on each side can be combined in one lamp.
The front and rear position lamps must light up at the same time with the end-outline marker lamps where they are fitted.
Rear position lamps must emit a steady red light.
For front position lamps, the following colour of light is acceptable: •white light •predominantly white light with a blue tinge •yellow light – if combined in a yellow headlamp
So I can't see anything in there about side position marker lamps?!
I am sure there's a more technical document somewhere, though...
EDIT: ah ha!! Found it on here:
www.motester.co.uk/draft-new-mot-inspection-manual-released/
which has a link to a PDF:
www.motester.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/New-Manual-29-3-18.pdf
which seems to be identical to the wording on the GOV.UK website above... LOL
It does list the different faults and whether they are Major / Minor / Dangerous / Advisory, though
I did also find what looks to be the actual MOT Testing guide - as in how the MOT centre should run, what processes they should use during an observed inspection (Appendix 8.9), etc. - which might be of use!? That Appendix is a good list of what/how they will check

Mine went through MOT perfectly fine, and that’s from a station that first time round failed my MOT for seat sliding mechanism not working as intended (duh, it’s got a fixed bucket seat bolted down....).

Without going too OT on your thread Andre, white to the front and red to the rear refers to your headlights, sidelights, and rear lights, there's no rules against what "extra" lights you can have, just no red anywhere other than the rear.
It's a common misconception.
