more thoughts on the Hispec rear calipers. been thinking about mont-adapter brackets and think I'll take a leaf out of Supermiata's 'boxmount' idea. the main bracket will be between the disc & caliper with a brace on the car side. should be an easy item to design & make..... then, tangent time again.... BMW front hub conversion time (again), I previously bought some E30 front hubs and then a set of conversion-wheelstuds as they usaually run with bolts to secure the wheel. the studs are not very long and considering that I need to make an adapter-spacer to get a suitable wheelface offset needed slightly longer - Ebay again Ebay USA for what I wanted as I was not sure of the studs available in the UK... 20 studs, nuts, threadlock & a suitable allen-key to fit the studs... shorter & longer studs fitted in the hub to test, uninspiring really also bought a 15mm diameter long-series machine-ream, this I need to dress the top-wishbone boltholes in the subframe.... Next. Rich.

I'm having a little attempt at a tidyup so had the tubular subframe out and a mk2 subframe and decided to compare. I bought the tubular frame for the extra space not wieght and the difference is easy to see. from the other end? note the differences betweenmk1 & mk2 steeringrack mounts and also that they're offset so dedicated rhd / lhd? trusty Salter spring-ballance to the rescue, ~34Lbs for the standard Mazda pressed-steel Mk2 frame. ~22Lbs for tubular. so a happy bonus of ~12Lbs (5 1/2kg) lighter, that added to the lighter brake discs & calipers makes for a serious difference but I'll be fitting some heavy items like a full competition-legal rollcage so the car will stay around the origonal factory wieght I've designed a few gussets and strengthening plates to fit the subframe although thats 'cad' on cardboard and not shown in the photos, partly for the enginemounts and partly as 'spare' mounts for a 'sumpguard' in case I decide to fit one (sumpguard is a bit of a joke with a drysumpped engine but it's a generic term for underside protection and an skid / undertray. also helps with radiator ducting and aero) Rich.

Good to know the actual weight difference between the subframes .... I keep meaning to fit mine but can probably do without the distraction from chucking an engine in and making it work!

as this thread is sorta "50 Shades Of Silver / Projekt Oh God What have I bought now?" I'd better confess to more stupidity no assembly as yet though! couldn't resist.... think I've got them as the previous owner didn't want to clean off the tigerseal from another tangent projekt I've a pair of identical light units that have clear lenses and a sidelight mount in the reflector. these apeal to me as allow instant headlamp 'flash' - something the popup lights cannot do if in the closed position, also these can be easily modified for cold-air intake feed with ease of adding aclosable flap for wet weather looning around. more stupidity to follow... Rich.

ebay is again responsible for more financial losses.... a Speeduino ecu that hopefully works it's a pnp for the earlier 2plug loom so not all-singing & dancing but possibly pinouts can be reconfigured or maybe theres some spare terminals on the circuit-board? I've wanted to play with one & learn Tunerstudio for a while & this one was at a price I decided was worth the experiment obviously theres no reason it cannot be used for the 5 and if it has suitable outputs then maybe it will be used - unless theres a better ecu available with more loadsites to setup the fuel & sparks... will play when its delivered. Rich.

okey, another slight tangent happened (again) Ebay again irresponsible if you didn't know what it is, the top right corner of the board might give a clue the underside, shows the 2 boards... the boards seperated, the smaller board being the Arduino Mega. looks to be one from Diy-Efi. diy-efi.co.uk/product/speeduino_mk1_mx5_pnpoddly enough, I've been considering one of these for a while but ecu's are (were?) far down my list of priorities... anyway, I've now got one in my mitts to play with so playing with tunerstudio to try & learn how it all works luckily I have loom plugs & wiring-tails from a stripped 1.6L Eunos loom so can convert this pnp ecu to standalone if I use it on the Silver 1991 car or it can plug directly into the white 1990 car if it gets used in that. also, in the first photo can see the end-cover (main plug end) is not a great fit, it's 3d printed from some plastic or other and I'm no fan of 3d print - will cut a new cover from some carbonfiber or similar to close the case & might seal to keep out the spiders on the flip-side, ebay again and I've taken a gamble on a 'broken' ME221 (to fit the '99-'00 mk2) so if it's repairable will play with that also (suppose thats another tuning software to investigate...) more fiddling to follow.... Rich.

Good. You are tinkering too much not to have a standalone.
