Hi All
A quick question - my 94 Eunos has different spring pressures on the gear shifter return, such that moving from neutral to 1-2 is lighter than moving across to 5-R. As I have the gearbox out, I checked the springs that control the return are in one piece, and all seems well.
Is this the same on all MX5's can anyone say? I read that the more resistance going into 5-R is to stop people accidentally grabbing R by mistake at speed, but I'm not sure how true that is...
I confess, I prefer having a more even gate, but if this is how they are, I may just leave well alone...

I've never heard of anyone messing with the gear shifter springs.

I only really took it apart to see if the springs were ok. I thought maybe the weaker one might have lost a coil, but it's fine so i don't think I'll try to mod anything.
Part of me would write like a short shift kit, but i find these tend to accentuate any notchiness in the shift already present.

My 99 mk2 5speed has the same characteristics.
I fitted a cheap short shift kit off eBay, along with an extended shaft to bring the lever up nearer to the wheel.
I love it, but it makes a hell of a racket, transmits lots of noise/vibration into the cabin.
I tried it the other day without the extension, and its awful, far too short a throw.
Thinking of throwing a 6speed box in, not sure I'd do the short shift again though.

I've always been so happy with the MX5 gearbox throw. It's so ideal for the car, drivers position etc.

The lever's too low and a bit short for my liking.
I'd love an IRP shifter, but I'm too tight for that!

On mine, it's not so much the great stick position, as the fact is not as slick as I'd hoped it would be. You have to be quite 'positive' sometimes!
I have driven a friend's MK2.5 and that was the same though.

Changing the turret oil in mine did 7 canoes of something all. I still hope that a box oil change will help some. Changing is much easier when everything's hot, but first changes into first and second *suck*

Glad it's not just me then!
1st and 2nd on mine aren't great. Not terrible, but not brilliant. It does improve quite a bit when warned through though.

Greg (thecarpassionchannel) filled his turret with grease rather than oil.
Not sure which 'boxes have separate turret, early mk1s iirc.
Might be worth digging a bit deeper, I'll try and find the video tonight.

I managed to pick up some Redline MTL gear oil a couple of years ago. The difference in my 6 speed is amazing. Highly recommended.

That's what's going in my 5 speed as soon as i can get enough daylight to get it in.

Good to hear I'm not the only one with a terrible 1st-2nd movement lol, although 2-3 is also tricky!
I sometimes take to double-declutching! Although I do find that dropping it out, letting it come back to the centre of the gate, then engaging the next gear works pretty well without needing to double-declutch.
