Hi all, looking at getting my 1.8 vvt forged to around the 330bhp mark, do i need to swap my 5 speed for a 6 speeder as I've heard that it is stronger ?

Will the 6 speeder cope with this power or should I consider other options ?, also will my 5 speeder prop fit the 6 speeder or are they different ?

From the guys running big power, it seems more to do with the way the power is delivered than how much is finally made. There are people running 400+ with a 6 speed box - as long as you "roll" into power and don't deliver it in a huge lump you'll be ok. From memory you need a 6 speed prop to match your 6 speed box.

6 speed and 5-speed 1.8 props are interchangeable. 1.6 needs a swap.thought the 1.6 NA prop was shorter & maybe diferent drive-flange for the earlier '6"' diff? was under the impression that the gearbox splines (& gearbox length) was common from 1989-2005? Rich.

Rich. You're right. My bad. So no swap needed unless swapping between 1.6 or 1.8 diffs.

It's 4th gear you need to watch out for on the 6 speed box, it's the weakest of all of them due to the construction of the box. It should be ok at 330BHP (flywheel) though, as long as you have reasonable levels of mechanical sympathy..

Thanks all for your help, time to hunt for a decent 6 speeder then.
Dependant on the mileage of the 6 speeder I guess it would be prudent anyway to getting the box rebuilt with new seals / bearings etc before installing ?
Is / are there any upgrade parts I should consider putting in to the newly rebuilt box ?, not going down the Quaife route due to cost.
Thanks.

Just put a good working one in. No massive torque mountain, aim for a torque hill. Track duty gets the box hot and kills it faster.
I have one spare, 334whp. Not many track hours with this power, many track hours with 254whp before that.
For street duty, the 6spd will handle more.

Thanks for the link ZED, looks like it’s a straight swap on a 1.8 MK2.5? Ignoring diff ratios etc.
