Don't do it! I had a brand new Elise 111R when they first came out. The MX5 mk1 is FAR more fun. You can get the five's rear canoe out at will and play with angles just for the hell of it. By contrast the Elise has the handling balance of a clumsy rear canoe heavy hammer in the wet When it starts to let go... it doesn't want to stop. Buying a five was the best car move I ever made. The only thing I'd ever consider selling mine for is a Caterham, with proper front engined RWD natural balance... If I didn't mind going deaf, getting soaked, while never being able to go touring in it (no boot).

It's just something I want to try, prices are on the rise and I can just afford one now. If I don't like it, I could buy 2 or 3 really nice MX5s with the money from selling it. I'll go into it with an open mind though, I know it's a much more focused car so there's no guarantee I'll get on with it Russell

The Elise is deffo better for pulling women. I had a few giving it big eyes, even when my girlfriend was next to me. Amusing. I was thinking to myself... "Calm down, its a reasonably affordable plastic car filled with rattles" Maybe you will love it more, but I honestly will never own another rear engined car again. Even if I won the lottery, my dream car would be FR. (Race spec Cobra please)

Considering that it's the model that EVO rated as the sweet spot of all Elise's I was massively disappointed in it ☹️ I ended replacing all the bushes, dampers, springs, steering rack, ball joints in search of the elusive scalpel like handling and telepathic steering...I never found it.What I did find was that it was a noisy, rattly, leaky, rear canoe heavy, understeering pig of a thing that wasn't particularly fast. I thought that maybe it was just me that didn't get it but a friend had a mint 111R and also rated it as one of the most disappointing cars on road and track he's ever owned. There are plenty of people that love them though 😉

If they are seen as good to drive because one can steer in slightly and then use power and weight transfer to bring the back end round gently and get the car into line for the next straight, then that is fine - but it's not really a technique one can use on all roads at all times... Not least because it's a risky business in anything but the dry, but also because there is always the risk of someone coming the other way or some dashcam King of the Road sending your 10-degree slip angle into the fuzz as 'dangerous driving'!

It may well be a driving technique thing, also down to what you're used to a bit. I'm from a kit car background so see the Elise as a luxury car because it's got a windscreen and doors, rather than coming from a normal car background and thinking it's rattly It's a posh kit car really, it weighs 300kg less than an MX5 and most of that weight saving is in carpet, sound deadening and any other creature comforts that aren't making the car faster. Test drive tomorrow, so we'll see if I like it. Also hopefully selling my V8 tomorrow!

Russell I sold my ex Academy Caterham race car to buy the Elise so it was a considerable step up in creature comforts 😂 Like you say, there's a different technique required to help "rotate" an Elise on track, mostly down to trail braking to keep load on the front end. i could never get it to click to be fair. I grew up with Mk1 and MK2 escorts so perhaps that's where my problem is! Hope you enjoy your test drive tomorrow 👍

Pleasure doing business as usual, forgot to have a look at the rear panel and didn't pick up the door cards, doh! I get the opposite of buyers remorse on the way back home, it's not the bits I buy I regret, it's what I shoulda/coulda bought as well

Do you happen to be getting rid of that ITB setup? Interested.
