Hi guys,
First post here and sadly it's a bit of an issue. Noticed the other day that I had some light smoke coming from the front of my NA, and when checking it out saw it was coming from the radiator, but couldn't see why and put it down to condensation. Noticed the next day that it has pissed all its coolant out, more steam this time and a wet undertray. Just got to work today and have had the same again. Just wondered if there is anywhere in particular I should be checking for cracks or anything, as I cant see anything initially.
Cheers in advance

The area where the aluminium core is crimped onto the plastic part of the radiator, commonly goes at the top.

the aluminium 'core' can get damaged and the plastic 'tanks' on the top & bottom can get brittle with age & crack, are the plastic 'tanks' black in colour or have they turned sorta brownish? if brownish then thats a good indicator of age & a good hint of possible future failure apparently new standard rads are not expensive, theres 'go-faster' all aluminium rads if that tickles your fancy? or secondhand are available cheaply also easy to fit as 2 pipes & 2 bolts then lift out of the car (NA / mk1's) Rich.

Cheers guys,
The plastic cover to the top of the radiator is still black, and does look pretty new. Not too sure about the radiator its self. I've only started having the issue since it became pretty cold. I'll post a picture when I get the chance. Have thought maybe it's my water pump as I have a sizeable amount of fluid being lost, and do get a loud squeal from a belt every now and again which I assume is it having fluid sprayed onto it from wherever the leak is.

you can get coolant-syetem pressure test kits cheaply (or pay someone to test?)
to inspect the waterpump, with the engine OFF....................
grab the waterpup pulley & wiggle / lift it, it theres movement then this will show worn bearings....
Rich.

Thanks for all the help guys, think I have found the problem though. Thankfully looks like a leak from a hose from the thermostat to the intake, but was causing all the other issues. Just need to find the right replacement now haha.
Cheers for your help!

Could I wedge one of these alongside an arc chamber?

It's possible, but increases the chance of the stereotypical ARC chamber dent appearing so you'll have to be more careful with the bonnet

SPAL are relatively cheap (under £80) and quite excellent and slim. I don't think the ones cheaper than theirs are worth it .i.e. not that much better than the OEM. The right size for our cars is 12" and.. it needs to be a puller not a blower. In my case I went for VA10-AP50/C-61A. Other option worth mentioning: Davies Craig
