So as I’m thinking of refreshing an mk1 1.8 engine, its going to get a blink head, what are your thoughts on going for a later bp6 oil pump. Specifically the one from the vvt engine. Supposed to have an increased oil flow. any undesired effects, impossibilities. I’ve read on miataturbo that it was a hint thicker 0,020”, would that effect the mounting of the crank pulley etc? Anybody done this?

.020" is ~1/2mm so I doubt that'd cause issues put a wanted add up everywhere for an old one to use for reserch purposes? Rich.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that the later oil pump was bigger. Looking at IL Motorsport (just for example) I see they sell NB oil pumps which are the same part for Mk.2 and 2.5. So is the bigger pump on all NB engines rather than specifically for VVT?

I’m pretty sure the VVT pump was designed for greater flow to supply the camshaft actuator and solenoid.

I’m pretty sure the VVT pump was designed for greater flow to supply the camshaft actuator and solenoid. Yeah, I can see that makes sense. Just curious that ILM sell one oil pump for both VVT and non-VVT NB engines. Of course it's also possible the larger pump was specified with VVT in mind, even though the VVT parts didn't get fitted until the facelift.

Yep,that’s a possibility...or IL Motorsport only stock the later VVT pump as it’s a straight swap for the earlier unit that was only made for a 2 year run. MX5parts only list 1 pump for all 98 to 05 models too.

From what I gather, there were 2 different pumps for the mk2 & mk2.5 but as time went by the vvt one became the only one for the mk2. Industrial economies.

Would anybody have a VVT oil pump on hand and take some pics for me please? I would like to see the cast markings. I bought a second hand one that I was told came from a MK2.5 VVT, problem with buying over sea got to trust the seller, and well I nor 100% sure it is from a VVT engine, at least not originally.
