Evening All, so I’m rebuilding a bp5 head. The valve lifters, hla, are not all nice and springy. 4 are solid, 6 don’t bounce as they should. I’ve looked up instructions and checked out YouTubes, so I get the idea. But the plungers on mine, all of them, don’t have that little lip that you catch with pliers or grips. are my lifters from another engine? Any idea how to separate the pieces so I can refresh them? Cheers

grip them with a pliers & pull? diferent manufacturers have diferent shaped 'plungers'? if they wont turn they are stuck) then soak on petrol for a few days to soften the gack I've had to 'tap' some on a workbench to shock them loose on a few occasions..... Rich.

What he said. A good soaking and pair of pliers sorted mine out.

well an update the problem with pliers is that the surface to catch is conical, really afraid to "scratch" the surface. I did find a youtube that showed, what I imagine is an older mechanic (can only see his hands) that held the bucket in-between 3 fingers, 2 on the sides and middle finger over the top, to keep it as flat as possible (or vertical to the tap surface) and tap the HLA on a solid "soft" surface. like a workbench with a wood top. So I sprayed some carb cleanet in it, let it soak a bit and tapped it on the bench ... it worked. Tried with a second one, worked again.
