Hi All, A few months ago I had the clutch changed and all was fine. stopped using the car for a few months as there was a lockdown ... then started using the MX5 again. So since mid-june there's been a strange knocking once in a while. got it spotted to it happened almost everytime I de-accelarated. Foot on the clutch didn't change anything, thought the suspension was going loose and that the rear end was trying to catchup with the front or the brake calipers maybe even the PPF. but all seems tight. so it's down to only happening when I actually take my foot of the accelarator fast. is this the diff going bad?

What are all your bushings like underneath the car? (Suspension, diff, ARB, exhaust)
If one or more are worn then something could be hitting on the bracket the bush is supposed to be separating it from, but it only becomes apparent with sudden changes in acceleration.

Does the back end try and step out when coming off the throttle mid corner too? Could be the diff bushes. Perhaps chuck in some Superpro diff void fillers?

Exhaust is a complete RB with new rubbers I had my wife drive with me and she could feel the knocking through the floor

Another thought related to bushes - the top mounts are all done up properly? suspension top mounts? I haven't had time yet to keep searching on the car or trying it out on the road in bends and so on. I'll see if I can this saturday. Off to the Alps on monday so need to get our MTBs ready

well little update haven't driven the car much but did manage to get it onto a lift. one engine mount not tight enough (nut on the chassis side), one crossbrace behind the engine a bit loose (found it had been cross threaded ), one gearbox bolt loose (the one above the clutch slave). the rest, suspension mounts, buches etc are all correct. the bushes on the diff seem to have quite a bit of play and found lots of oil leaks, including the gearbox rear seal (that is/was new, less than 500 miles) !!!!! even coolant. time to pull the engine out
