Well. . . progress. Of sorts.
Pulled all the plugs. All wet, but quite sooty. So I wire brushed them all to clean them up and re-installed.
Car coughed after about 2 seconds cranking but didn't catch. On the second and third attempts I got a big backfire (!). I then I stopped turning it over as it smelt like I was cooking the electrics around the starter motor.
Not sure what to try next.

Chuck a fresh set of plugs on.
I had a set of old plugs on the rolling road which I’d previously cleaned up & thought they’d be ok. Unfortunately I was wrong as the car was missfiring when boost built. A new set of plugs cured it instantly.

Sounds as if you are very rich and had flooded it and the backfire was the fuel igniting in the exhaust.

You’ve established that you’re getting fuel, did you check for a good spark.
As mentioned by howard, a bum set of plugs can cause bad starting, all that unburnt fuel has to go somewhere.
Crossed posts!!
But are they sparking?

Are you running coilpack + leads, or CoP conversion?
If plugs are new, leads are cheap to replace as a test.
You may have said - is the battery recent / fully charged / giving 12v+?

Battery is giving 13.3.
Have ordered new plugs to be sure (Even though the inline spark tester showed they were getting power, maybe its weak? Couldn't find my gauges to check gaps).
If they don't work I'll try leads next.

Howardb66 and dadbif - you nailed it guys. Despite an in-line spark check showing the plugs were getting ignition charge, they were clearly not sparking in the cylinder. Threw the new set of NGK BKR7E-11 plugs on that arrived this morning and it fired first time! Hurray
