I just left the original PCV in situ, and blocked the hose. Simple, effective and it looks like you have at least some of the factory emissions junk still fitted.

Haha, well, we all have our special interests I'm of the opinion that the pcv shound be removed with a can setup.and the port on the intake manifold should be plugged. For forced induction. For n/a with oem intake i'm not sure that one need a catch can.

what? realy? SNAFU then I'm of the opinion that the pcv shound be removed with a can setup. and the port on the intake manifold should be plugged. For forced induction. ^^This. For n/a with oem intake i'm not sure that one need a catch can. for competition use they are needed (definately rallying) but I'll agree that theres a lot of needed extras pushed by social media - but not necessarily usefull pcv only usefull if theres a vacuum a pnumatic watertrap is a highly effective oil-vapour trap but hardly used for such Rich.

Great idea! They have a useful drain at the bottom as well as being transparent.

How's this working out for you in terms of oil consumption ? Does it fill up much ? Reason I ask lowender is that, if the right hand of those barbs is connected to the 'exhaust side' cam cover outlet, this will basically cause an equilibrium of pressures on both sides of the PCV valve, meaning the PCV valve will just block flow, since it is a 'resistor'/'restrictor'. It needs pressure difference to flow. .... I'd cap the right hand of the barbs (from the perspective of the photo) and put the the 'breather filter' on the exhaust side cam cover. You'll then get cross flow and the stuff in the head will be sucked out through the PCV valve, gently so as not to suck out too much oil. I took it off and had a look today - no oil in it, just a coating of sticky gunk on the baffle in the can. Which suggests it's doing it's job. Oil consumption is negligible, and there are no oil leaks, I've had the can fitted for 2 years now, most of the time with the can venting to atmosphere through a filter. I've recently routed it back to the inlet manifold because MOT is due, and my tester doesn't like to see VTA. Given how little the can actually collects, I will probably end up removing it and reverting to the oem setup. The reason I fitted one in the first place is because I was horrified at the amount of gunk in the inlet tract and intercooler of my Impreza. It seems that the baffles in the cam cover of the MX5 do a better job though. Confusingly, the IL Motorsports catch can operates on the exhaust side outlet only, with the PCV valve going to the inlet manifold as per standard. Seems pointless, according to your findings running a 2 can setup.

Well I've learnt a lot in this thread and I've not even got the thing fitted yet.
If not much was collected after 2 years of use then I'm not too sure what the point is. I could have spent that money on beer.

I'm not too sure what the point is. if an engine is worn or suffering blow-by then a properly designed system can catch a lot (Mann provent?) also, theres a whole aftermarket industry ready to help you with your money I could have spent that money on beer. or enjoy your underbonnet accessory I don't drink much but beer sounds good today after a few hours surfin... Rich.

Now that you have a nice catch can, you are all set for the 1.8/k24 transplant and turbo build. It's always good to have a catch can then!
