While pondering mx5s I wondered what it would cost to bring over a good quality early NC RS (2.0 sport in Uk spec). The Jap cars didn't get anything extra as far as I know but they'll be cleaner underneath and the colour options were much larger. Also, imports are alway more cool.

The tail lights don't have the ugly extra plastic lenses inside, the RS didn't have leather seats. The jdm cars had 170 PS but that difference is likely to be due to how power is measured in different markets, they do have a higher redline too at 7500.
If i was looking to import an NC I'd only look for the m'z tune model

The spec I really want is actually a UK spec. The metallic grey with tan interior, 2.0 Sport with LSD and Bose.

If jdm cars redline at 7500, does that mean it would be safe to increase the redline on ukdm cars to 7500?
Are we talking nc1 or nc2?

Sounds like you want a VS rather than the RS The galaxy grey and tan combo was the one featured in the brochures at the time, it does look quite posh 7000 for the nc and 7500 for the nc2/3 on account of the engine revisions.

I would not get too obsessed with the Bose. It's not that great.
In my prht nc1 I find that even with the lid up there is no point trying to listen to music on the motorway. The exhaust noise and tyre rumble drown out any bass and mid coming from the speakers unless you crank it to deafening volumes.

I really like my bose setup (though I've swapped the headunit out for a DAB one). Though to be fair, I do like my volume deafening. Certainly find the bass to be quite impressive. Of course ... I did come from a Lotus Elise and before that spent a lot of time in my 998 Mini, so I've always found my MX5 to be refined and quiet, even with the roof down.

The Bose one isnt too bad in its own right though, its almost as good as the setup I have in the Mini which I spent a reasonable amount getting the way I wanted.
Does yours do weird things with regards to volume? I find mine seems to get quieter as I go faster and louder as I go slower, almost as if it had speed based volume but in reverse! Its bloody annoying.
Also is it standard for the sound to completely change when you open the roof (as if its using a different set of speakers)

With the stock head unit it is supposed to do something called automatic level control, (I think ), I have never noticed it working but, I think there is a mic in the dash that is supposed to sense ambient noise and adjust the volume accordingly.
The stock Bose also reacts to the roof latch position and switches to different eq curves for open and closed roof. I think you can choose one of three for each mode. Maybe that is happening at the amp rather than head unit? I find it really annoying, listen to radio with roof up - fine, drop roof at traffic light - huge bass boost kicks in and I become the archetypal middle aged bloke in a cheap sportscar blasting dad music to everyone within 400 yards.

Yeah the roof drop sound change has caused me embarrassment more than once ...
Interesting that gives me some places to look for the oddities. I thought it might be "features" of the OEM setup going wrong. Might even try and put the OEM unit in to turn off the features.
