I'm finally in a position to buy a nice mk1 after a string of mk2.5's. However it was pointed out to me in an earlier thread that mk3's have become more affordable, I want to get a car thats completely sorted and ready to enjoy this summer, then put into hibernation over the winter to preserve it. The thing is a rust free mk1 import is around the same money as a good mk3.
I know they're completely different animals but I'm being pulled in both directions, the raw old school mk1 with the added long term investment thing, or the reliability and modern performance/handling of the mk3 (saying that I've never driven a mk3). I just wondered if anyone out there has gone through this and how its turned out for them?

Both are nice cars. You'll have to try them and make up your own mind though as they are very different.

I don't see the mk1 as a long term investment. Drive a mk3 and see if you're comfortable with it, then buy one

"reliability and modern performance/handling of the mk3"?
I think the mk1's are still pretty bullet proof. Mine certainly is and I abuse it mercilessly and rarely do anything good with a spanner.
The handling of the mk3's is arguably worse, simply because they are heavier. I don't think there is a consensus view that the handling is any better than the mk1's? I may be wrong. The mk1's seem to win more autosolos/autotests.
The performance is what you will be buying then, do you want the charm of a low powered 'pure' car, or the thrill of a moderately powered 'modern' car? Its horses for courses.
Of course if you are going to modify anything on either, well you can throw out all of the above and make the car that you want!

Mk1s win more autosolos as there are more of them doing it, they are available much cheaper and are a perfect tool for entry into this sport, there are also one or two very good drivers in them, which if they were placed in a mk3 would be just as successful, driver skill being the important part of a solo more so than the vehicle used, of course a good driver in a good vehicle is the perfect storm, I win my fair share of solos in my mk3 when I drive it right

When I was deciding my thoughts went like this:
A Mk1 will at some point require some welding and rust treatment, is more of an outdated car and will likely need work on it mechanically (especially old suspension etc.) if you are fine with that then itll be a great car. It has the purity and charm of a classic light car. For me this was no good as I already have a classic mini which comes with the same set of joys and problems.
I bought the Mk3 as its more comfy, waterproof, hopefully more reliable due to being newer (not a given), wont rust (so much) and I wanted a few more mod cons as its my main car (aircon, folding hardtop etc.).

I bought a mx5 to enter into the Bristol Motor Club MX5 challenge, I had no love for MX5s so was quite unemotional when buying, it was simple a case of what had the better engine/gearbox for solos/sprints and the most potential for the money, when mk1s and mk2s of decent quality were the same price as a ropey but still quite decent mk3 decision was made.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it's helped. I'm going for a mk1 because it's what I wanted when I sold my mk2.5, its a bit like gambling, never change your mind from your first instinct or you will regret it. I've got a shortlist of a few cars so I should end up with one this weekend.

Yup autosolo, Sunday, Chepstow racecourse, it's undersubscibed so plenty of places left, closing date is today though, but reckon you could get in with an email/call to Kate. (she is my sister in law, so if you can't sort it I can ) Link would help bristolmc.org.uk/summer_autosolo/
