Yup the Oil filter is smeared with oil on its gasket then done up hand tight. Only problem is the oil dries out and rubber sticks to the block, I am of the screwdriver through the filter school, I think it will be a lot easier on the ITB car, I can take the air filter off and its easy to get at from above.

I have just had a go at the hot idle mixture as with the ME221 and ITBs it has been running way to lean on tickover when its at 90c, touch the throttle and it was pinking, I think I have sorted it out.

My vote always goes for the Jass filter tools. I use them by hand and they give the extra leverage. I always use them from above and they do the job on both the turbo and itb car.

I got it sorted, that funny tool grips tighter as you turn it, so once I got it around the filter, it came off pretty easily. Did the new one hand tight :-)

And got the new rear fog/reversing light bar sorted, turns out earthing it on the boot floor was the problem - for some reason that didn't give a good enough earth, so now it is earthed on the same lead as the rear light cluster. My battery to body earth is a bit dodgy too apparently, will have to sort that out.

Returned to the Halfords owned McConnaghy run MOT centre armed with .Gov mot book on how to test a pre August 95 car that does not appear on the database. Then proceeded to take the tester through the emission testing process flow map and left the car in his hands. Called back later to find out the result and was told “it’s all ready pal, passed”. I like educating people.

Weeks ago I lost a small yellow handled screwdriver, I have had it for 40+ years, searched and searched again. Last week I opened my electrical tool box and there it was, I had looked in there several times. Boundless joy, my wife came into the garage in time to see me kissing the handle.,, Poltergeists!!

<nostalgic sigh> GPO flat-bladed screwdrivers with transparent yellow handles were ubiquitous at work when I started but at some point they just disappeared. They were really nice to use. Whatever plastic or resin they were made from gave you plenty of grip even though they were plain smooth handles with no bumps or ridges to grip.

Finished my COPS install, intermittent misfire at idle, turned out the battery dwell compensation table in MS2 was altering my dwell from the 2.5ms I wanted, it was reading 100% @ 12v rather than 14v, all fixed now and idles better than ever. Big thanks to Turbomiata, a wealth of knowledge on there.

Dropped the car off to get rust fixed, he's still not even looked at it 2 weeks later.
Also been out a "test drive" in his words, criticized the Aluminium belly (ARC intake) and the Randall intake, suggesting he could mock up an open cone filter.
I wouldn't care as much but it's burning oil, until I can replace the supertech valve stem seals. Never easy!

After a gruelling 12 Car rally on Friday (well, gruelling for the car, we were surfing along the grass/mud in the middle of some of the lanes, and scraping up rocks on others), I really need to get some more ride height out of my HSD coilovers. I asked a question in the Mk1 MX5 group on Facebook and they reckon there must be something wrong with them, so I need to check them out properly.
In the meantime I am getting on with a belt and water pump swap. I took off the radiator/fans, and I've taken off the alternator and PAS belts, front covers and cam cover so far. All looking OK in there. Got new plugs and leads, new water pump and new belts to fit next.
