IT'S ALIVE! All I had left to do tonight was fill the gearbox with oil and reattach the air filter thing under the bonnet, which is just as well as it's -2C here tonight. So when I put the key in and the engine wouldn't start, I was pretty much ready to sell the bleddy thing! A few minutes later I realised I hadn't reconnected the wire between the ECU and the spark plugs, and it started up OK 🙄 (all four wheels off the ground) Then the acid test, with the engine running it wouldn't go into gear from neutral, so I stifled a cry and turned it off, put it in gear and started the engine while in gear, wheels spinning OK. So I turned it off again, put it in gear and started it with the clutch in, then dumped the clutch roughly, it made a bit of a clunk and then it all worked! So I can get into gear from neutral, and change gears again too. FINALLY! Of course now I've got the car on a SORN with an expired MOT, so I can't just take it for a burn, but will at least need to take the long way to the MOT station to shake it down a bit after 6 months off the road. I'm now wondering whether it would have done the same thing 2 months ago when I first put the gearbox back on after flipping the friction plate around, but at least EVERYTHING in the clutch system is completely new now, down to the bleddy clutch fork boot.

I drove it out of my garage! Sat it running on the drive for a while yesterday to warm through, then did some pre-MOT checks.
Took the long way round and dropped it off for the test this morning....my main worry is emissions since I don't know much about the replacement engine. They do know to do the import/non-cat test as it's been there before. Fingers crossed...

....and it failed, one of the front brake hoses is rubbing on the wheel when it's at full lock. A bit odd as they are braided hoses designed for the car, but at least I should be able to sort it out fairly easily.

Mk2.5 big brake fast road pads, what do people recommend? I was looking at some EBC Greenstuff, they don't need to be track pads, just fast road for now.
Just gathering up parts for the swap, got a mk2 master cylinder and mk2.5 booster unit.

I always liked greenstuff on the front of my 1.6 with m45, but lots of people malign them. Not very good until warm…

Well.... looks like it's rodders pads then, I was going to start a rust fund! You changed your booster as well to match?

You changed your booster as well to match? I'm on the original brake booster, it's fine. You'd get more milleage by adding a proportioning valve..

I'm on Rodders pads with mine too. Added a proportioning valve when I still had the standard rear calipers but haven't taken it off. Didn't do anything with the booster.

I've brought it home and will hopefully fix it tonight. Then a quick trip for the retest and it'll need taxing, and we should be good to go rallying on Friday night! Can't wait to razz it around the lanes again

It's a No from me on EBC Greenstuff...
The Hawk HP+ are amazingly good from ice cold - feel very 'grindy' through the pedal and give a lot of reassurance, you can just drive without even thinking about if they are going to work or not.
