It is manifold, downpipe and cat length total that *should* end up being the same, to give the same length from cat back.
So a car with a long cat would have a shorter downpipe bit or something like that
The midpipe and backwards *should* always be the same length from my understanding of it all

Oh my me. OK so perhaps it is the angles of the joints that are different on the exhausts pre and post 3082 VIN if the bit after the cat is all the same length. The downpipe on mine is not standard either. I would imagine it is fleabay finest and the previous owner, having bought what appeared to be a cheap stainless downpipe, fitted it and realised that it needed a longer cat which he presumably could not procure so picked up the welder. We've all been there.
Confused as to why there are different exhausts for different VIN on mx5parts. Tempted just to try to order a ECP Klarius thing and hope I pick the right one at this point as it may well come tomorrow to continue the saga if I order before 4pm...

What year is it?
If it's a pre-95 import, you should be able get away without a cat and just go straight for an AK Automotive Race system, which meets the downpipe and removes the cat section completely.

It's a 96 I think. P reg non-import Merlot Roadster. VIN number is before whatever was changed on UK ones changed according to the guide pdf on mx5parts. In my rush to get SOMETHING to bolt on as quickly as possible I have ordered the Klarius one which looks like it will fit for now. We shall see he we go with a cheapy one and possibly get something shinier when there's actually some sun to reflect. Bored of rain today.

I will investigate further tomorrow when I have more time. Need to cook some dinner for the missus now. I do fancy the idea of a shiny exhaust. Might give me an incentive to make the rest of the car look a bit less thrashed. Well that was an eventful day anyhow, who would have thought that constantly scraping and smashing an exhaust against the floor would cause weld to break..Perhaps there is a market for exhausts which also have a ski plate armour fitted for the 'I ain't care' crowd.

I forgot the angle change thing...i think later 90s 1.8s had a different angle ob the cat
I know for sure that my 1994 1.8 import can have an import 1.6 cat as it is running one right now

96/97 UK cars have completely different exhaust systems from the manifold back. Earlier cars and imports used the same cat back, and the difference in cat length was countered for by the down pipe. And, obviously there's the difference in flange orientation, too.

I suspected that might be the case. Still not entirely sure what was originally on mine with the weird transitional nearly 3082 but not quite VIN, not that it matters as long as the things I have ordered will mate with the downpipe <chortle>.
Place your bets then folks- Which direction will this new exhaust I have ordered be pointing if I manage to orientate my flanges in a way that actually seals up? haha
Also, you know that 'catalytic converter safe silicon sealant gasket goo...Pretty sure that is what killed the cat this time. I shall be getting proper gaskets this time.

IT CAME!!!! It all came. Even though I was at work, thanks to two super awesomely commendable delivery chappies using their noggins with some seriously DEVIOUS hiding places and rolled up hidden message trails. I am speechless. Anyhow, I am off to touch some things and make it aaaaaaaaall fit somehow without reaching for my magic car fixing goo paste.

The DHL chap called for a second time this afternoon on his way back to the depot with no prompting from me FYI.

Re-discovered why I bought the thing. Torrential rain on drive down to Bristol ... and (unlike the Lotus I had before) no leaks. Then upon arriving in a suddenly sunny Bristol, roof off in 12 seconds. I love my MX5.
Drove it all the way home with the roof down too ... nothing beats 1am motorway blast with the roof off

Right then, it would seem to be the case that the shonkey scaffpole adaptor may actually be required in order to connect this car's mysterious and exotic, once shiny ebay downpipe. The header pipes/downpipe is all one piece up to the cat and seems to be 4 into one not 421 or anything fancy. The problem is that the long cat will not fit the downpipe in any orientation. The solution I am thinking just to get this prarrie canoe sorted is just get rid of the unknown downpipe. NEW MANIFOLD PLEASE. Any ideas for where to get a 1.8 downpipe? Looking at mx5parts it would seem just under £300 is the going rate?!
