Howdy all,
My car has developed the lovely HLA tick and it's a lot louder than I expected. So I have been thinking of ways to eliminate it.
I've changed the oil, added lifter treatment and it's marginally improved things. I'm now looking at removal and cleaning or replacement of the lifters.
This got me thinking, If I'm going to the effort of dismantling my existing head, would it be easier/simpler to swap out the NA head for an NB?
I've heard the NB has more efficient cooling and is ported better. I'm also sure I've seen mention on various forums that the heads are transferable (with relevant manifold changes) too.
Am I imagining this or is this actually possible? Is it far too much effort to go to just to eliminate an annoying noise?
For what it's worth, I'm planning a starting a turbo conversion this year as well so better head equals more ponies, right?
Any comments on HLA issues or head swapping would be appreciated!
Thanks.

All the stuff I've seen about NB heads on NA blocks concerns 1.8 engines. I don't think I've ever seen a discussion of what the differences are between the generations of 1.6 heads.

thats a good point - the later 1.6 heads are on the low power (90hp) cars i think, though I did read somewhere that Skuzzle like these engines for FI so maybe its a good idea if you are going turbo I suspect that the manifolds wont fit though. skuzzle is the man that knows - hes just about tried every bit of an mx5 with every other bit!!

That rings a faint bell. Maybe the later head has less overlap in the cams. That's generally a good thing for FI.

Thanks for the link. A quick read of that thread says to me that the 1.6 NB head possibly won't fit an NA due to the cam position sensor. I think I got confused between the 1.8 being better ported and the 1.6. It looks like the 1.6 isn't much different between save the cam sensor. I'm guessing that the NB head doesn't suffer HLA noise due to the solid lifters?

The little reading i have done suggests mk2 1.6 on mk1 1.6 is nowhere near as easy or workable as mk2 q.8

Put a NB B6 in a 93LE and it ran great. I only got to do one day of autoX in it, but was impressed. Did have to modify the intake cam to add a CAS drive, but worked fine. Used the 1.6 intake so likely not a huge jump in flow, but higher compression and solid lifters. Pulled nice and strong on my last run, until i punted a half dozen cones.

Little update on this. After an oil and filter change to semi synthetic the tick vanished.
