Sorry, I know these come up often and I've done a search but can't quite seem to find something matching my description.
I have this sort of slapping sound, (rather than a tapping) that rises and falls with the revs. It almost sounds like a belt but I've checked them and they all seem to be in good nick and tight enough. It seems to be coming from the nearside front. Is there anything low down that I may have missed that could be the culprit?
I'm pretty sure it's not HLA noise as it did it ages ago when it hadn't been driven for a while but some fresh oil and spirited driving seems to have cured that.
Any ideas appreciated!

Is anything touching any of the pulleys or the alternator?
Is it down on power at all?

Not that I can see. Power is still the same, is weird. Need it up on the ramps.

It wasn't an MX5, but quite a few years ago I had a belt on my old Renault which started to strip itself, but it took me ages to see it because it was only visible when the belt was stopped at exactly the right point. It made a horrible noise, I thought my transmission or bearings were disintegrating but it was just the loose piece slapping against the bodywork.
Might be worth getting the under tray off and having a really close look at the whole length of the belt.

Something to look for! Also a mate of mine pointed out that it could even be a manifold blow which is something I hadn't considered until he said, it's a ticking/slapping noise and could well be an intermittent blow, if anyone reads this and has a similar problem then it's worth taking a look.
