I've got a new MX5, so much nicer than my last one but it's only the wheezy 1.6 90bhp (I think) Now reading Skuzzle's guide he says it's the good engine to strap a turbo on to but it's pretty toss otherwise. I've never met the guy but I've read enough about him to know I can trust what he says. What's the problem I hear you ask?! The problem is I don't really want a turbo (I know... Poor form!) I want bike throttle bodies ideally, I guess I'd prefer a supercharger to a turbo but I want NA really. I hate to say it but if I could afford one I'd have an Elan. I guess I'd like to recreate a modern Elan. Is there any point though? Will I spend all that money and see 92bhp?! I don't want big bhp but a bit more would be nice! What say you all?!

If you want ITBs, then go ITB. You won't see much power increase by changing nothing else, sure, but there's lots of things you can do while keeping it N/A. For example, exhaust manifold, head work (skim/porting), camshafts, lighter flywheel, engine management, injectors, pistons and rods for higher compression, and so it goes on... it's a lot of money and turbo will get you more power for less money. But it's not all about the numbers.

Thanks for the reply mate. Yeah you are right. I guess I have to weigh up what I want to what's stupid. I've got the exhaust and manifold already. Annoyingly my old mx5 was a 130bhp 1800

If your looking for faster and na, swap the engine for a 1.8 vvt

The 1.8 vvt sounds like a awesome idea but I'm kinda guessing that would mean a pooh load of rewiring and such like. Maybe just a standard 1.8 swop with good quality manifold, exhaust and CAI setup would be a easier option.

A mk1 with mk2.5 sport running gear would be interesting

I was hoping to stay with the 1.6 but it doesn't look like I could get good returns without it. Unless I go for a turbo...

Do an MK2 1.8 non vvt engine
I gained 10bhp over my MK1 1.8 engine then got another 10 from Jackson racing CAI and maxim works manifold
Plus you don't have to worry about trying to get vvt to work. Just install an RPM switch to activate the VICS butterflies

If you want to keep the 1.6, get the head/cams from the full power one and get the 20-25bhp back from the earlier engine

I swapped the whole engine as my original standard mk1 1.8 engine died on track
It isn't *too* much work to go from 1.6 to 1.8 engine for you to go the MK2 engine a route and there are guides on miata.net
but then again it would be relatively easier to change the head with a 115bhp one in terms of not having to remove and install an engine. It also keeps the character of the 1.6 as the 1.8 has a different feel to it. But less power and torque of course.
There is plenty of info out there for all your options so worth spending time looking into it

I'll look into the head and cam swap. I guess that way I can look into super or turbo charging later on. My ultimate aim is 150-170bhp so nothing ridiculous.
I guess as with anything though. It can snowball!

So. Confession time. I owe you all 5 minutes of your lives back... I managed to get to my parents this afternoon where the car is. It's got 8 slots in the crank pulley... I think that makes it 115bhp. It's an L reg uk model so I presume it was 93 MY. Whoop for me but whoops for this post! Maybe a head skim and refresh and the itbs with management I might make 140bhp? Not what I'd like ideally but the noise!

Easiest way to confirm is by the chassis number stamped on the plate in the engine bay.
