So my car (NC 2.0 Sport) has developed a nasty rattle. Likely its the bottom end but in a mad grasping at straws exercise we wondered if it might be the timing chain (or tensioner).
Can this be replaced with the engine in the car? If yes it seems worth giving it a go before taking the engine out to be rebuilt ...

Have you tried car with the Aux belt off temporarily to see if its one of the many pulleys in that loop, not long had issues with mine making a racket.
If you've run it low on oil, it's more likely bottom end issue on these

Post a link to the video, a few others might be able to tell if they think it's the chain. Sadly it sounds to me like the bottom end vids others have posted.

Here's the video that the Boss man is referring to I tend to agree that its bottom end and terminal but as I will need to ask a lot of time from other people I should at least check things such as the timing chain and aux belt if they can be done without removing the engine ... Of course if I cant change the chain in situ then its a non-issue, its engine out either way then.

I don't know about the cam chain, just looking at the workshop manual it looks like it can be done in situ once you have removed a whole load of crap, though of course they suggested you take it out, having had the front end off of mine a few times doing rad and the aux belt etc there's a fair bit of space once that lot is out but I'm no mechanic.
That vid sounds like every other vid on youtube that ended up with a new bottom end though.
Phone some of the MX5 garages Skuzzle/Rodders they all seem like they would be helpful.
