So my new car is a turbo, but it's an unreliable shonky build and assembled by a 24 carat spanker. The ME221 isn't mapped yet, running basemap. I was all set to just get it mapped straight away but it turns out it has a compression issues and I need to change the block.
I have a new block in a month or so but it'll more likely be 2 months before I can get it in the car. I could carry on running basemap in the meantime but it doesn't start very well, fuelling is to pot at idle and I doubt the boost will be doing the compression issues any favours.
What would be the pro-s and cons of running the car NA? I could take off the ecu and fit a standard one, then take off the pipe between the turbo and the intercooler and put a cone filter on the intercooler pipe. It'll be noisy, but it would work, wouldn't it? It's running yellow injectors but that shouldn't make a difference im guessing...
All thoughts appreciated, I don't mind if the current engine is damaged long term as it's going in the bin once the new one is here, but it does need to last 2 months, and that could easily be 2000 miles.

Standard ECU and a filter on the intercooler should be fine. Make sure there's a filter on the turbo still. You'll want to keep the wastegate fully open as well so you don't spin the turbo too much - couple of zip ties should do the trick I think... Re injectors I would guess they would overfuel a bit.

The question really is wether its worth the effort - Will I get a cleaner idle? are basemaps generally a bit rubbish at idle? will running NA get a few more miles out of an engine with low compression?
I might just run it gently and see if it pops!

The stock ECU won't be able to control those big injectors. If you swap them for stock injectors and haven't removed the sensors the ECU needs (thinking particularly of the airflow meter) then you could be back in business with the stock ECU.

In theory (from reading way too many threads) an ME221 turbo basemap should run like an NA basemap if you haven't got any boost occurring (so wastegate kept open etc), so as long as it is tuned to the yellow injectors you *should* be able to running from that.
Otherwise go back to stock ecu and injectors etc as Martin suggests, which is probably the simpler option

Agreed, the turbo basemap should be fine to run an NA setup; it just wouldn't ever enter the top half of the fuel and ignition maps. So keeping the wastegate open is your least hassle option, as long as the poor starting and idling doesn't drive you mad.

If you're keeping the me221 for the long run you'd be better off learning more about how to tune idle and get it running better and just run it with low boost for a while until you get the new engine in and get it mapped properly.
