We live in a relatively quiet road in Reading not far from the town centre. It's one of the few roads which allows unrestricted, on-street parking. At lunchtime a guy knocks on the door asking if we've seen his Merc which he parked outside last weekend. By coincidence mid-week SWMBO noticed a flat-bed lifting said Merc onto the bed and about to drive off. Being public-spirited she asked the lorry driver if he needed any help (as if!) but was met with a scornful reply. She took the reg - trade plate, red-on-white (plod have a saying "red-on-white, stop on sight"). Naturally the owner was pretty upset and I suggested he report it to the police and his insurers. After he'd gone I thought I'd report it to Thames Valley Police as I'd noticed some-one last week using the same/similar red-on-white trade plate on at least three different cars, all after hours.
The operator took my address and said "was it a silver Merc?" which it was.
"No problem, it was lifted by DVLA at 1440hrs on 7th September".
So I assume the owner must be a serial offender or similar as normally the DVLA vans will (only) clamp un-taxed, un-insured cars left locally. Funny old world isn't it? Cheers, Pewe.

I do think it's daft that we don't have paper tax discs any more - how do we know when to report a car abandoned now??

I do think it's daft that we don't have paper tax discs any more - how do we know when to report a car abandoned now?? I've recently done this for a vehicle parked on my road. In Kingston you can report a vehicle as abandoned if it's been in the same place for more than 3 weeks, regardless of it's tax and MOT status. But in my case, I checked online and the car had no tax or MOT and was clearly abandoned as you could see that dirt and rubbish had built up around the wheels and the winscreen was covered in dirt and detritus. Within a week they had stuck a removal notice on the window, and the next week it was gone. All pretty painless!

We have a real space shortage on our road and because it's not regulated parking, people do abuse it from time to time which just makes life a pain for those of us who have a genuine reason to park there. So I'm ruthless now, I'm always on the lookout for cars parked there which haven't moved in ages.

Just to finish this one off. The owner knocked the door recently (we've been on hols). Transpires he paid his road fund by Standing Order last year and assumed it would keep going. Another reason for tax discs... Finally he was pretty miffed at having to pay the fine - evidently DVLA will lift a vehicle as opposed to clamping if they happen to have a vehicle in the area. It's the same fine regardless but he had to pay more - between ringing them and him collecting it had clocked onto the next 24hr period.. Cheers, Volumex.
