So here’s my 5.
I bought it back in 2012. I viewed & test-drove it in the absolute pissing rain, it was the first one I’d seen, the roof had seen better days and I couldn’t get a good look at the underside. So obviously I left a deposit there and then. It was a bit of a punt.
A week later though I picked up this, a reasonably solid 1996 Eunos S-Special II. Montego Blue paint, 15” BBS alloys, LSD, usual S-Special stuff and a slightly flaky factory hardtop. Basically a fake RS Limited. And I loved it. (Apart from the horrendous stick-on walnut trim that decked out the cabin. I didn’t even get the car home before I started pulling that all out.)
It’s fairly factory-spec apart from MeisterR coilovers, Cobalt exhaust and TR Lane roll bar. A cold morning lesson in “why you should always unzip” did require a new hood though.
While I was shopping around for hoods I got less and less happy with the black hood/blue paint combination. It just didn’t look quite right to me, so in the end I went with a tan replacement. I know tan hoods can be a bit old-fashioned, but I think this is enough of a twist on the classic “tan on BRG” colour scheme to be a bit different.
For the first few years I owned it did everything: daily commute, road trips up to Scotland, trackdays, the lot. Although driving it that often was great, it was a bit of a tough life. Rust, scratches, car park dings and mileage all accumulated. Then, at the start of this year I moved house, then moved job. In opposite directions, 60 miles apart. Needless to say my 5 is no longer my daily! It’s a bit of a shame not to drive it more often but it’s the best thing I’ve done for this car. No more salty roads, no more rushing to finish fixing it on a Sunday night, no more spending my winter commutes getting blinded by oncoming traffic. Every time I drive it now, it’s through choice. And that makes me enjoy and appreciate it, way more than when it was my daily.
