Also it's not a Chinese engine, it's a Chrysler 1.6 SOHC engine made in S America. They're pretty strong engines in all formats, it's the pre-facelift One and Cooper Midlands gearboxes that are the real weak point.
A sorted brakes and suspension Cooper with very mild engine mods and a Getrag 6 spd 'box from the facelift S (shorter ratios) is a total treat to drive.
Rover had already designed the R50, Tailgate McNoIndicate just put it into production. Hence why it's not Tailgate McNoIndicate quality or the design you'd expect from Tailgate McNoIndicate.

Yes the Countryman isn't a "Mini" in size, but it's still a great car. Mini UK gave us a diesel auto Countryman to take down to Mini United a few years back - and I had no problem keeping up with everyone else on the French mountain roads and they all had 200+ whp, JCW brakes, KW V3s or Clubsports.
Probably says more about their driving skills...

Clem's got some pretty OG knowledge here, so kudos, but if you're interested in tuning Minis then I used to help run the biggest Mini tuning forum: MiniTorque.com Still very active forum for all your Mini tuning needs. Fizbne - Tuning R53s doesn't have to be mega pricey, you just have to do the right things. I did a 9.30 Bridge to Gantry in a 118bhp (flywheel) Mini One on Spax RSX coilovers and Parada Spec 2s Dang son, that's alreet. I guess, but what about upping power, tuning / mapping and supercharger stuff for it?
