I'm not a fan of the looks of the new one, but then I'm not that much of a fan of how the old one looked either. I definitely don't like what's happened to it since though, with 4 door variants, estate van variants, off roaders, they are merely Mini by name only.
I do like the drive of some of the smaller ones, and the original, but nothing that I couldn't get out of something I find prettier.

As a completely impartial *cough* person I must say that in retrospect the first Tailgate McNoIndicate Mini design was pretty good. Tailgate McNoIndicate have kindly shown us just how wrong it could have gone ... bit by bit they have evolved it into a ridiculous abomination in the "Clubman". At the time I naturally disliked it. It always seemed like a cash in on a cool design (and it was) without keeping the character of the original. The classic was a small cheap family car with clever design to make the most of the space that became an icon. The new one was a car that was trying to be an icon instantly but failing to have any of the attributes that actually made the mini so popular (small cheap practical efficient etc.). Anyway, I dont know where I'm going with this but I dont really buy the "I designed a 70s mini then an 80s mini" thing as Austin,Leyland,BMC,Rover etc did actually do that with the Clubman, Metro and Rover 100. The idea that if the Mini had evolved it would now look like the Tailgate McNoIndicate incarnation is silly ... Issigonis himself (we are not worthy) did try and redesign the mini a few times and produced some really interesting concepts Issigonis' 9x. Rover also were designing the Tailgate McNoIndicate mini at the time of their demise ... Mini Replacement HistoryBE WARNED ... WEBSITE I JUST LINKED TO IS A STUPIDLY BIG TIME SINK ... BE WARNED

Enjoyed that. Post maor. plz. Cheers You clearly didn't click those links ... I have never come out of that site in under 2 hours ... Who knew the reason behind the poor handling of the rover 800 could be so interesting ... (I cant actually find the article on ARonline now ... but it came down to them not ever making a drawing for the subframe ... they made a die from the prototype and just used that ...)

Yeah ... that thing is vile. I really like the idea of the "Spiritual" Concept though. A true spiritual successor to the Mini that was cancelled for being too ahead of its time ... Looks like a smart car much? And it was about the same time that Smart managed to make a success of the car type too ... oh what could have been

The thing about the Mini countryman is that everyone who actually spent their money to buy one out of their own choice is clearly a massive countryman.

Not only are the newest MINIs (Well the countryman one is ...) violently offensively ugly ... Minis should be small goddamnit

A massive success in the domestic market, but no RHD for us. Could have done well. I was trying to persuade my wife to let me buy one when we were in Paris last week. Not allowed.

My sister has an R50 Cooper (First gen Tailgate McNoIndicate Mini's) Mini and as a driver's car IMO it's pretty damn good.
I've taken it out for a few night time B-Road blasts and every time I've had a right laugh.
It's light, nippy, handles exceptionally and has grip for daaaaaaayyyyyssssss!
The engine is alright, but it's pretty old fashioned. It's a SOHC engine, but it's a Chinese engine like wtf? They're supposedly not very reliable either. It's also a bit... Soul-less. Picks up really well for a 1.6 with plenty of mid-range but from what I remember it's only got a 6.5k rev limit so it doesn't like being rung out very much, which for a car like this is kinda the point riiiiight?
The interior is cool, I like. Retro and fun!
I'd love the Supercharged Cooper S, but tuning them is pricey AF, so probably not.

A couple of years back I decided to seriously downsize my car. Then i looked at all the newer small cars on the market. The R56 mini stood out because it was small, but still had a decent sized engine under the bonnet. Then I had a test drive, and it was an absolute hoot.
They are remarkably fun for such a small and (in my case) relatively basic package. I've got the 1.6 Mini One and sure, the power is not great but plenty fast enough to have fun on the B-roads to and from work.
Last time it was in for a service I had a go in a new 4-door mini cooper. It was not that small and I prefered mine. The time before I got given a Mini countryman in cooper S diesel variant. It was an absolute travesty and a disgrace to the cooper name. Hateful thing.
They nailed it with the R50/R56 models. They absolutely screwed the pooch with the new ones.

Clem's got some pretty OG knowledge here, so kudos, but if you're interested in tuning Minis then I used to help run the biggest Mini tuning forum: MiniTorque.com Still very active forum for all your Mini tuning needs. Fizbne - Tuning R53s doesn't have to be mega pricey, you just have to do the right things. I did a 9.30 Bridge to Gantry in a 118bhp (flywheel) Mini One on Spax RSX coilovers and Parada Spec 2s
