Grrr, I swear it knows when I need it to work... It's been doing it for a while but has got worse suddenly - I am wondering if it's to do with the high idle issue on the other thread I started... Basically, really light throttle or eased off and slowing down = all is fine. Medium to heavy throttle = it sounds like a bit like diesel when it's just started up and revved, kind of like something metallic is doing something it shouldn't. It is not a really heavy knocking like a diesel, it almost sounds like it's 'crackling' or 'pinging' under load? If that makes any sense? I am wondering if the timing is massively out somehow? or it's pinking reeeeally badly?? My worst fear is I'm bouncing valves off of something... It doesn't seem to do it when I'm under the bonnet revving it via the throttle cable linkage, only when driving and under load, which makes it a PITA to try to track down without getting it on some rollers. I also can't work out if it feels down on power - some days it feels super-strong and begs to be thrashed to within an inch of its life, other days it sounds like a bag of spanners and has no 'fizz' (the latter of which seems to be mostly when the roof is up! lol) - so it can be a bit variable in 'feel' from day to day. It's just really canoeing annoying, it's been sweet for ages and now I need it, it breaks. Grrrr!! Any first thoughts on lines of investigation much appreciated! I'm thinking a (very slow) trip to Skuzzle is needed...

Since you need the car for work and you've already got an idle issue it would seem to make sense to get someone to have a look at it - peace of mind too.

Sounds like your ignition timing is way over advanced? Could be that the CAS (cam angle sensor) has moved. Have just read some of your previous posts about belts shredding, cam cover bolts working loose, pulleys wobbling etc and the fact that it is a SNC engine. It's probably worth taking the car to a MX5 specialist and get them to check the cam/ignition timing and condition of the crank keyway. Fingers crossed!!

Cheers chaps It's just so annoying because it is so much fun when working well! Am thinking a second car for the working week is the way forward...

Think long and hard about running a second car would be my advice. I do it and it can be a pain in the a$s. I was running three and copped on, took one off the road as it was never ending doing this and that on them plus of course the expense.
