So I drove the 5 for the first time in the dark yesterday and OMFG I could not see a thing, a chucked fag butt gave off more light.
I had Raybrigs on my old 5, which seemed ok, but I'm sure things have moved on since then so what are my options?

I've just got an H4 conversion lens (Hella I think), together with Philips Nightbreakers and they actually seem as good as my previous Ford Focus (not as good as the wife's XC60 it has to be said). I'm commuting in the dark (and now foggy) both ways down country lanes and haven't had an issue. I recall MX5Parts do a clear lens copy of the Raybrigs at £50, but looks like you can pick the Raybrigs up for £75, so I'd probably stick with them and decent bulbs. In fact, I may just order a set now (curses to you and your ideas!) .

Thanks Rusty, interesting that nothing has moved on that much, and good old Raybrigs are still the safe option

There are HID kits you can get for an H4 fitment, but I believe if output is greater than 2,000 lumens you need to have a self levelling system and washers for the lights. Fitting that onto the Mk1 would be a challenge, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone has done that. Same goes for LED fittings.

Phillips Night Breakers? I thought they were Osram?
I've just bought Osram night breakers and Raybrigs for my car, but it's sorn'd for the winter so I won't get to try them until spring.

They are Osram yes as I have them on my RAV4. Looks like Raybrigs and decent bulbs is still the way to go?

Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Extreme (IIRC) for me. Although having seen Corders's Raybrigs they might be a better bet...

Also make sure your bulb connectors are in good condition. They love rusting and causing bad connections
And keep your lenses cleaned. Makes a huge difference

I have random clear lenses with nightbreakers and they made a massive difference to the stock lights. Not sure my euro beam deflectors are helping much

If you want the best replacement H4's, look at the PIAA range.

I have just installed Wipac Crystals, bought a set of the Halfords Ultra Brilliance H4 bulbs because they were 2 for 1. The difference between them and the old ones was night and day (pun definitely intended). I can actually see at night!
