If you want the best replacement H4's, look at the PIAA range.
This.
I've had the Xtreme White Plus Anti-vibration H4 bulbs in previous cars and have been extremely happy with them - lots of white light, much better than standard, plus they apparently draw the same amount of current for double the output. (I've no idea how, electricity is in the box marked 'Things that work by Magic' in my head )
As an alternative, the round 7" LED headlamps sold for Jeeps etc fit with a small amount of work, and they are brilliant, in both senses of the word! I done a guide thread if anyone is interested

I now have the Raybrigs fitted, so big improvement already but will check out those bulbs when the ones the Raybrigs came with implode.

Sorry to jump on this, but I've just bought some new Phillips bulbs for my car, as for some reason the full beam keeps cutting in and out on one side. Is this likely to be bulb or wiring related? Regardless the originals are pants! But how do I tell if the headlamp unit has already been replaced? Apologies, Im guessing this is a stupid question, but not sure what the difference is. And if they are original has anyone ever used this site for parts? The Raybrig's are £19 each? www.mx5usedparts.co.uk/mx5-mk1-eunos-roadster-pop-headlight-2096.html#

Very probably not your bulb, but the wiring. take take off the connector.. put it on again.. see if it is better. The standard headlamp doesn't even have replaceable bulbs.. it's a whole sealed unit. You might find some manufacturer markings on the body of it. Don't know mx5usedparts.co.uk that's a good price for a raybrig unit tho.

It's also got no reverse lights at all, so I'm hoping its nothing too serious.
So if I can replace the bulbs, chances are the units already been upgraded?
