I've just bought another MX5 (no surprise there) and it's come with HID lights. Looks like a decent setup, but they are pretty bright ... what's the thoughts on them?
Wasn't 100% sure if they were legal / if there are any MOT issues with them? It's a 2002 Mk2.5 if that makes any difference.

Grey area. If they're not blinding anyone and the beam pattern works probably OK.

I didn't have an issue with them on my 2.5 apart from always felt a bit self conscious about them

To the letter of the law they are not legal. All cars fitted with HIDs must also have automatic level sensors and adjusters, usually done with sensors on the suspension struts and motors in the headlight.
Most testers will check for pattern and let them go though, I've not had a problem with previous cars, though I've yet to change this one.

If you can see a clear cut off so you know you are not blinding oncoming traffic, fine.
If not, bin 'em.
