Needed to replace both gear shift boots on my NB and after hearing how fast some aftermarket and even original boots can split, I thought I'd gibe the Doctor MX5 lower boot a try. This is a different design where instead of the rubber being bonded to a steel mounting plate, the boot has a flange and a steel retaining plate sits on top of this and the three bolts go through both plate and boot flange. After removing the old boots and replacing the turret oil, the new boots were fitted, but the gear change had become very notchy and stiff. I figured that the rubber flange of the new lower boot had extruded slightly and was putting excess pressure on the bush that sits on the gear lever pivot ball. To stop this happening I removed all traces of rubber from the mounting plate of the original boot (a bit of heat helped here) luckily I hadn't binned it and fitted this with it's thin gasket under the new boot and it's top plate. This ensures that the pressure on the top bush, is as it was designed for. The gear change is now very smooth and hopefully this new design of boot will last.

This is what I had when I changed mine over. They last forever. I went to go buy the upper silcone one again as mine has finally given up the ghost & I can't find them anywhere. Do you know if they still exist?

Their site shows them as being out of stock, still. As these are so easy to replace I fitted an aftermarket one. Figure it will probably last as long as the Mazda one anyway.

I think NA's/NB's are the same to be honest but not 100% - someone here will correct me. I looked at the Jass one, they are on offer in group buys but i think it was 38 quid (I might be wrong though so best check if your interested)to me this seemed a bit pricey as you can get genuine mazda ones for around the 20 quid mark & I'm sure I paid about 15 quid for Dr MX5 one back in the day?
Might go with the Jass ones after they have been proved to last....

My Dr MX5 upper one fitted on easily ... sadly the boot itself only lasted a few months before it ripped. That's down to normal wear and tear apparently ... not impressed! I got a 2nd hand oem one off Junk Yard Dog for a few quid and that's been fine for 5 years. Russell

I'm needing to replace this as well. Two options have caught my eye, one from Moss which is a full rebuild kit at £58 or Autolink's kit at £37.02 on EvilBay. Not really sure why the 2p is there ?!?!? Has anyone bought either one of these ? Thanks

Don't forget if you order direct from their Web shop or pay them a visit you get a forum discount.

I bought the Moss kit a year back when I first got the car. Sorted my gear change and I checked it all the other day and it is fine with no damage.
Remember Moss will give you a Mighty5 discount if you go for that.
