Ive noticed my speedo is really inaccurate when I get to around 65/70MPH, in that it doesn't want to climb much higher as I accelerate. For example, on private track my tomtom GPS will say 80, but speedo will be more like 75. Any thoughts? Is there a cable that might need lubing up?
PS It does have after market dial faces (Indiglow!!!! lol) but they look to have been fitted ok.
PPS it has the original gearbox and diff as standard on the R-ltd.

So it gets worse the faster you go? Sounds like it has the wrong clocks for the gearbox/diff ratio.

Seems to, but really only notice it at this area of the needle movement, almost like its sticking. I may have to find somewhere to go beyond 80MPH (not had the car long) to see if the needle makes any progress at all, or is actually sticking.
I remember when I swapped out the diff on my old V-spec to a Torsen, the speedo would under read, but it didn't behave in this way.

Sounds to me as though the actual dial itself is sticking. You mention that the faces are aftermarket, perhaps the needle is snagging on the face when it gets round to that part of the dial?
The speedo cable is attached by a cog to the transmission, so it's unlikely to spin out of time with the transmission unless the teeth on the cog are damaged, but if that was the case you would probably notice abnormal performance at all speeds.

I'm not a huge fan of the indiglo style faces, although very affective at night, so maybe a good excuse to change them.. Will update this thread once I've tried going faster

Had a similar problem on my other half's Mk1. Speedo was fine at higher speeds (ish) but wandered around all over the place at around 30mph.
I swapped in some clocks I had lying around from one of my old cars, problem is her low mileage import now reads well over 130k miles but ho Hum.
It may be worth pulling out the clocks and re seating the Speedo cable, or if you can borrow some from another member and see if that solves the issue.

Yeah mine has only done 56k so hope I don't need to swap the clocks haha. Sounds like a job to do when I take it off as part of the dash removal in the spring.
PS that must make her MOT history look interesting hehe
