Definitely check the UJ at the bottom of the column, if the pinch bolt is loose the steering column shaft will have play in it but will not go further than the flats on the shaft. Drive the car up on some ramps and get someone to jiggle the steering wheel while looking very carefully at the UJ.
Free fix if it is this, it was on mine.

Thanks for the replies, chaps  I recall the pinch bolt being mentioned before - I want to get it booked in at skuzzle as I think the timing's out, so I'll get it serviced and the column looked at while I'm there! £20 is a bargain price for a rack, Horney, so thank you for the offer I may well take you up on that, depending on the outcome of investigations! |

The windscreen surround de-rusting work is going to be more expensive than planned, I reckon, so might have to wait!
More money would fix a lot of things... lol
